Erwan speaks up on rumored breakup with Anne

Erwan Heussaff and Anne Curtis (MS Photo) Restaurateur and food blogger Erwan Heussaff said he and girlfriend Anne Curtis are “fine,” following their reported separation after more than three years of being a couple. Heussaff took to Twitter to address a story on the popular showbiz blog Fashion Pulis, which cited a “very reliable source” in confirming the alleged breakup. “Thanks for the concern, but let’s remember that FP isn’t BBC, there are more veracious sources of information out there. We are fine,” he said. Heussaff also answered the story’s comment on his and Curtis’ “behavior” on their respective social media accounts. “Also, I’m not in showbiz, so my relationship is mine to keep precious and not yours to devour,” Heussaff said. “If I don’t post about it, that’s my prerogative.” Heussaff’s last post about Curtis on his Instagram page was on April 19. He shared a photo of them together in Myanmar. Likewise, the “Dyesebel” star’s last post mentioning Huessaff was on the same date. Both tweets from Heussaff about the rumored breakup were re-tweeted minutes later by Curtis on her page, which is seen by her 6.41 million followers. A couple for almost four years now, Curtis and Heussaff have denied repeatedly that they are planning to get married soon, citing their respective careers as their priority. Aside from his blog and restaurants, the Filipino-French Heussaff is also a triathlete and has been active in sharing his weight loss story, having weighed 245 pounds at one point. Corona refuses to comment on ‘de cajon’ Sandigan ruling to freeze assets

Ousted chief justice Renato Corona on Friday said he would rather not comment on a Sandiganbayan ruling freezing his and his wife’s assets, which are valued at P130 million. “No need for a reaction. De cajon na yun per SB (Sandiganbayan) Rules,” was Corona’s brief reply in a text message, without elaborating. Section 3, Rule 57 of the 1997 Rules of Civil Procedure, states that an “order of attachment shall be granted only when it appears by the affidavit of the applicant, or of some other person who personally knows the facts, that a sufficient cause of action exists… (and) that there is no other sufficient security for the claim sought to be enforced by the action.” Even Corona’s legal counsel Magilyn Loja was mum on the Sandiganbayan order. The lawyer had earlier said their camp has yet to receive a copy of the Sandiganbayan order. “But once we receive the resolution, we will have to discuss it with our client so our client can take appropriate action,” Loja had said. The lawyer had also noted that: “(Corona) is in the Philippines and he has been facing all cases filed against him.” Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Teresita Diaz-Baldos, Second Division chairperson, signed the two-page directive granting the issuance of a writ of preliminary attachment, which was dated May 5 but released to the media only on Thursday, May 14. The writ was attached to the P130-M forfeiture case filed by the Office of the Ombudsman against the Corona couple on March Read More …

China paper supports ‘non-peaceful’ steps against PH, Vietnam

Agence France-Presse 12:05 pm | Friday, May 16th, 2014 http://www.globaltimes.cn/ BEIJING – A state-run Chinese newspaper backed the use of “non-peaceful” measures against Vietnam and the Philippines Friday, as it considered the possibility of war in the strategically vital South China Sea. Vietnam is experiencing its worst anti-China unrest in decades following Beijing’s deployment of an oil rig to disputed waters, with at least one Chinese worker killed and more than 100 injured. “The South China Sea disputes should be settled in a peaceful manner, but that doesn’t mean China can’t resort to non-peaceful measures in the face of provocation from Vietnam and the Philippines,” the Global Times newspaper, which often takes a nationalistic tone, wrote in an editorial. “Many people believe that a forced war would convince some countries of China’s sincerely peaceful intentions,” the paper added. Beijing claims almost the whole of the South China Sea, including areas close to the coasts of other littoral states, and the Philippines has provoked its fury by seeking United Nations arbitration in the dispute between the two. China’s foreign ministry has condemned both Manila and Hanoi, and accused Vietnam’s leaders on Thursday of “indulgence and connivance” with anti-China demonstrators for failing to rein in the protests. The official Xinhua news agency, meanwhile, wrote in a Friday commentary that Hanoi “bears unshirkable responsibility for the violent attacks against Chinese companies and nationals, and must take all necessary and effective measures to ensure the safety of foreign companies and nationals in Vietnam”. Vietnam PM texts nation amid anti-China riots

Associated Press 11:59 am | Friday, May 16th, 2014 Vietnamese protesters carry a banner with a Vietnamese slogan reading, “China must respect and execute the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.” AP FILE PHOTO HANOI, Vietnam—Vietnam’s prime minister has sent a text message to millions of Vietnamese urging them to boost their patriotism to “defend the fatherland’s sacred sovereignty” but not to engage in violence. The message that was sent late Thursday and into Friday to subscribers of the country’s cell phone operators didn’t directly condemn the riots that have broken out this week following China’s decision to deploy an oil rig in disputed waters off Vietnam on May 1. It said that only that “bad elements should not be allowed to instigate extremist actions that harm the interests and image of the country.” Vietnamese patrol ships sent to the rig are currently locked in a standoff with Chinese ships guarding it. China claims ‘indisputable sovereignty’ over reclamation on Mabini reef

By Matikas SantosINQUIRER.net 9:57 am | Friday, May 16th, 2014 The DFA released photos Thursday of the Mabini Reef showing China’s reclamation activities on the disputed area. DFA MANILA, Philippines – China defended its move to do reclamation and construction activities in Mabini Reef (Johnson South Reef) that is part of the Kalayaan Island Group in the West Philippine Sea. “Whatever construction China carries out in the Chigua Reef (Mabini Reef) is completely within China’s sovereignty,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a press conference Thursday. “China has indisputable sovereignty over Nansha Islands (Spratly Islands) including Chigua Reef and the contiguous waters,” Hua added. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) released a series of photographs from 2012 to 2014 showing the progression of development China has made on the reef. The first photo in 2012 showed a wide expanse of water with a small outpost on the reef. The second photo taken in 2013 showed a concrete structure already built on the reef with what appears to be a helicopter landing pad. Two photos taken in February and March 2014 show a large portion of the reef already reclaimed with sand making it look like a sand bar. DFA spokesman Charles Jose said in a briefing after the release of the photos that China was likely constructing an airstrip that will be used for military purposes. China rejected the protest filed by the Philippines regarding the reclamation citing its nine-dash line claim that covers nearly the entire South Read More …

AP FILE PHOTO WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden is conveying America’s objections about China’s behavior in a territorial dispute with Vietnam to the top brass of the Chinese military. Biden met Thursday with Fang Fenghui, the military’s general chief of staff. The White House says Biden told Fang the U.S. was seriously concerned about China’s unilateral actions. Biden told Fang the U.S. doesn’t take a side in the territorial confrontation between the two countries over an area in the South China Sea. That’s where China has triggered protests in Vietnam by deploying an oil rig in the long-disputed seas. One person has been killed, a Chinese worker in Vietnam. General Motors recalls 3 million more cars worldwide

AP FILE PHOTO NEW YORK—General Motors announced a new round of recalls Thursday, totaling nearly three million vehicles worldwide, as the US automaker works to speed up its response to safety issues. GM said that five recalls affected 2.99 million vehicles, with most of them—2.71 million—in the United States. The company said it expected to book up to $200 million in charges in the second quarter, mainly to cover the costs of recall-related repairs. “We have redoubled our efforts to expedite and resolve current reviews in process and also have identified and analyzed recent vehicle issues which require action,” said Jeff Boyer, vice president of GM Global Vehicle Safety. “These are examples of our focus to surface issues quickly and promptly take necessary actions in the best interest of our customers.” GM shares fell 0.7 percent to $34.70 in early trade in New York. GM said no deaths were tied to any of the defects in the newest recalls. The largest recall involves 2.7 million vehicles to fix a brake-lamp problem linked to 13 crashes and two injuries. Corrosion in the wiring harness “could result in brake lamps failing to illuminate when the brakes are applied or brake lamps illuminating when the brakes are not engaged,” GM said. That recall affects the 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2007 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura. GM also recalled 120,620 Chevrolet Corvettes in model years 2005-2007 due to a problem with the low-beam headlamp. The three other recalls were for Read More …
