Senate Majority Leader Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano (left) confers with Sen. Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV (right) and Sen. Sonny Angara before the start of the Senate Session on Monday (Jan. 27, 2014). (MNS photo) MANILA, May 12 (Mabuhay) – Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano clarified on Monday that no Senate rules will be violated if there will be hearings presided separately by Senators Antonio Trillanes IV and Miriam Defensor Santiago on the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) signed between the United States and the Philippines. Trillanes is the chair of the Senate Committee on National Defense and Security while Santiago is the Chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Both Trillanes and Santiago earlier called for separate investigations into the EDCA, specifically on the additional number of American troops who will participate in the Balikatan exercises. According to Cayetano, there will be no conflict if ever the two Senate committees will conduct separate hearings on the EDCA issue. Cayetano cited an instance that the Congress have had such kind of issue in the past where there was a clash of jurisdiction which was heard both by two Senate committees but not on the same period of time. Cayetano sided with Trillanes wherein his committee has a 100-percent jurisdiction over the issue of what is the content of the EDCA. On the other hand, Cayetano explained that the question of Santiago is also important since it is whether the EDCA is a treaty which should be ratified by the Read More …

Michael Kors: ‘I never imagined I would walk to a Michael Kors store in Manila’

Michael Kors with models Tian Yi, Ming Xi and Shu Pei wearing his Jet Set collection MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine STAR caught up with Michael Kors at a suite in the Peninsula Shanghai. Here are excerpts from our interview: PHILIPPINE STAR: Why did you decide to hold the Jet Set Experience here in Shanghai? MICHAEL KORS: Shanghai because when we think about the fast life, you know New York is certainly the fast life; Manila obviously is a fast, quick-paced life, but no city has the speed and the curiosity right now that you find in Shanghai. So I thought it was the perfect opportunity to celebrate the idea of living the fast life. What do you think of the market here in Asia? For a designer, it’s most interesting when people are curious about things that are new, things that are changing. If women and men have so many rules and they’re not ready to experiment, quite honestly, as a designer it’s not challenging. Last night, in fact, we were out walking, and in 20 minutes, I saw two young girls, one wearing a bright yellow long dress, with a yellow handbag and then 10 minutes later, I saw another young girl in a yellow mini-dress and yellow shoes. And I said to someone I was with, “That’s incredible that we just saw these two girls wearing yellow.” And he said, “What do you mean?” I said, “Normally people would say a Chinese woman should never wear yellow, Read More …

The real deal (Last of Three Parts)

According to (Delfin) Lee and his lawyers, contrary to what Pag-IBIG has been saying, GA nor Lee never absconded with P6.5 billion in HDMF money. It was money paid indirectly by HDMF to GA by way of housing loans to homebuyers in Xevera 2. They added that there is not a single demand letter from HDMF to GA for that amount, nor a civil case for collection. It is the property buyers, not GA, who are indebted to HDMF. They also claim that there was no special treatment given to GA. In fact, under their agreement, compared to the usual two years required from other developers, GA was required to buy back from HDMF the buyer’s contract to sell on a much longer period of coverage of five years. This means that in case of the buyer’s failure to pay their amortization, Globe Asiatique is obligated to either pay or update the account of the delinquent borrower or replace the latter with another buyer. As to claims that there was double sale, GA clarified that under the GA-HDMF agreement, the contracts to sell of buyers who defaulted for three months would be cancelled, and their units offered to replacement buyers. Given some defaults, GA opted to look for new buyers for these units. These units include those held by the 28 buyers who complained that they were duped into buying units that were already sold to others. Titles to these units could not be released to the new buyers since Read More …
