President Benigno S. Aquino III delivers his departure statement during the send-off ceremony at the Departure Area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal II in Pasay City on Saturday (May 10, 2014) to join fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders in attending the 24th ASEAN Summit in Nay Pyi Taw, Republic of the Union of Myanmar. “Moving Forward in Unity to a Peaceful and Prosperous Community” is the theme for this year’s ASEAN, highlighting the importance of a united ASEAN. (Photo by Lauro Montellano, Jr. / Malacañang Photo Bureau) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III has expressed confidence that the recently signed Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the United States will stand legal scrutiny even if it is challenged before the Supreme Court. “Will it stand scrutiny? Yes. Will there be people who will try to derail it? Yes, also. But we are reasonably confident that anybody looking at it objectively will be able to say that we have met all the stipulations in the Constitution,” Aquino told reporters Sunday after the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in Myanmar. He issued the statement after groups and individuals, among them Bayan Muna Partylist Rep. Neri Colmenares, said they will be challenging EDCA before the SC. Aquino, however, said the panel which negotiated the agreement consistently reported to him and ensured that the deal adheres with the Philippine Constitution. EDCA was signed two weeks ago, hours before US President Barack Obama arrived in the Philippines Read More …

ASEAN shows rare united front vs China

By Martin Abbugao NAY PYI TAW, Myanmar) President Benigno S. Aquino III links arms with his counterparts in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for the traditional group photo opportunity during the 24th ASEAN Summit Plenary at the Jade Hall of the Myanmar International Convention Center here on Sunday (May 11). (MNS Photo) NAYPYIDAW, May 12, 2014 (AFP) – Southeast Asian leaders have expressed “serious concern” over worsening territorial disputes in the South China Sea, presenting a rare united front against an increasingly assertive Beijing. Vietnam and the Philippines led a successful push for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to deliver a thinly veiled rebuke to China over the standoff in waters home to key shipping lanes and thought to contain huge energy reserves. But a defiant Beijing said Hanoi’s efforts to enlist the support of its neighbors in the row were “doomed to fail”. The 10-nation ASEAN, in a statement released on Monday after a summit on Sunday, called for a peaceful resolution to the maritime rows, which flared up this month after China moved an oil drilling rig into waters also claimed by Hanoi. “We expressed serious concerns over the ongoing developments in the South China Sea,” said the joint statement from the summit in Myanmar, without explicitly pointing the finger at Beijing. ASEAN called on all parties involved to “exercise self-restraint, not to resort to threat(s) or use of force, and to resolve disputes by peaceful means in accordance with the universally recognized principles of Read More …

The Dow Jones industrial average index jumped by 0.68 percent, or 112.13 points, to reach another record high at 16,695.47 on Monday. In the US, the Federal Reserve kept to its tapering pace and reiterated its preparedness to continue supporting the economy. “As the US earning season begins to unwind, the impetus has not been as strong as many believed. Nevertheless, with more than half of the firms having released their reports, there is little reason for the bears to show up,” Calaycay said. Rebel bombs kill two Philippine soldiers

Muslim guerrillas from a breakaway faction have killed two soldiers in a wave of small bomb attacks in the southern Philippines, the military said Tuesday. The blasts were claimed by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), a guerrilla faction being hunted by the military after the government signed a peace treaty in March with the main Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). “If they (military operations) will not stop, we will bring our battle in other areas, including cities,” BIFF spokesman Abu Misry Mama said in a call to a local journalist. A roadside bomb planted by the BIFF exploded on Monday as a military convoy passed through the town of Datu Unsay on the southern island of Mindanao, killing two soldiers, said Colonel Dickson Hermoso, the area’s military spokesman. Four other soldiers were wounded, he added. Three other improvised explosive devices either exploded harmlessly or were disarmed in the region Monday and Tuesday, Hermoso added. He said the bombings were an a BIFF riposte to a military operation that killed 53 guerrillas in late January. “They waited… and now, they exact vengeance,” he told AFP. He said the BIFF was still trying to disrupt the peace accord with the mainstream group. The BIFF broke away several years ago from the 12,000-strong MILF, which has abandoned its fight for a separate Islamic state in the southern Philippines in exchange for the creation of a Muslim autonomous area. While security was tight in the south, “a small group Read More …

Interest: The Price of Money

Money has a price. Let’s say you won the gold medal for some prestigious competition, and your older brother offers you a cash reward. He asks you if you want to receive Php100,000 now, or Php100,000 next year. Many of you would choose to receive the Php100,000 now. This is because, first of all, you can spend the money now. Once you receive the Php100,000 now, you can use it immediately to settle debt, to buy necessities, or to shop for clothes and other things. For others, the Php100,000 can immediately be invested in the business or in a portfolio, and can thus earn profit. Still, other people may argue that if the older brother and you quarrel at some point in the future, he might change his mind and not give the money. Others with knowledge in economics will argue that money is subject to inflation, which means that money loses value over time. Whatever your reason is, it is important to acknowledge at this point that money has time value. This means that money now is more valuable than the same amount at some future time. However, there is no agreement to how much more valuable money now is compared to the same future amount. If instead of offering Php100,000 now or Php100,000 next year, your brother feels very generous and offers you Php200,000 next year, many of you might consider getting the amount in the future. However, if he only offers you Php100,001 next year instead of Read More …
