MANILA (Mabuhay) – The House Committee on Agriculture and Food has reported out for floor deliberation a measure declaring May 15 as National Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Day. The body chaired by Rep. Mark Llandro L. Mendoza (4th District, Batangas) approved House Bill 4478 in substitution of House Bill 470, which also declares May 15 as a special non-working holiday. Rep. Agapito Guanlao (Party-List, BUTIL), author of House Bill 470, said the important role and the contribution of farmers and fisherfolk in the development of the country shall be recognized by commemorating every 15th of May as National Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Day. Guanlao said Presidential Proclamation No. 33, which was issued on March 21, 1989, declares the month of May as Farmers and Fisherfolk Month. This coincides with many celebrations such as the Carabao Festival in Pulilan, Bulacan, the Pahiyas Festival in the Quezon province and other feasts, which are all festivities in farming and fishery, Guanlao said. Guanlao said local government units also undertake activities in farming communities and hold gatherings for farmers and fisherfolk organizations. But these, Guanlao lamented, are less anticipated or even ignored. “This Representation has always been cognizant of the roles played by farmers and fisher folk but strongly believes that attention afforded to this social Read More …
Early morning at Vigan Cathedral MANILA (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Saturday urged Filipinos to show their support for Vigan City in Ilocos Sur as one of the world’s new seven wonder cities. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said she hoped Filipinos would show the same support for Vigan as they did for Puerto Princesa’s Underground River. “I hope we show the same support for Vigan in the same way all Filipinos in social media supported the campaign of the Underground River,” she said on government-run dzRB radio. In 2012, New7Wonders announced the PPUR made it to the list of the new seven wonders of nature, after many Filipinos showed their support for it via texting. PIA posted on its Twitter account two ways to support Vigan’s bid for the distinction. The first way is to log on to http://n7w.com/en/cities and vote, while the second is to text VIGAN and send to 29290777. Senator Juan Ponce Enrile gestures during the budget committee hearing of Bureau of Customs (BoC) and the Department of Finance (DOF) at the senate yesterday afternoon. Also in photo was Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri. (edwin muli) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Lawyer Jessica Lucila “Gigi” Reyes, the former chief of staff of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, has asked the Supreme Court to quash the arrest warrants issued by the Sandiganbayan against her for plunder and 15 counts of violation of Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act in connection with the pork barrel scam. In an 18-page supplemental petition, Reyes through her lawyer Anacleto Diaz, also asked the high court to stop the Sandiganbayan Third Division from proceeding with the hearing on the case against her. Reyes was ordered detained at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig. She is currently at the Philippine Heart Center (PHC) in Quezon City. In her petition, Reyes said the anti-graft court committed grave abuse of discretion when it “hastily” issued the arrest warrants for plunder on July 4, 2014 and for graft on July 7, 2014 against her. She said the anti-graft court failed to properly perform its duty of personally evaluating the evidence on record in determining the existence of a probable cause to warrant the issuance of arrest warrants against her. Instead of evaluating the evidence, she said the Sandiganbayan simply adopted without citing any reason, the findings of the Ombudsman that she should be prosecuted for graft and plunder. HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — China has ended drilling and exploration operations at an oil rig it deployed in a section of the South China Sea disputed with Vietnam and will relocate the unit, Chinese state media reported. Beijing deployed the massive rig in early May close to the Paracel Islands, triggering a furious reaction in Hanoi and the most serious uptick in tensions in the waters in years. Hanoi demanded Beijing withdraw the rig, and sent ships to the region to try and disrupt the operations. The Chinese move triggered protests in Vietnam and deadly anti-Chinese riots. Beijing insisted it had done nothing wrong because the waters belonged to it. Xinhua said the China National Petroleum Corp on Tuesday announced the end of the operation, citing the beginning of the typhoon season. It said the rig would be relocated to operations close to China’s Hainan Island. The report said the company found oil and gas during the operation, but was assessing the data gathered before deciding its next move. It has always been unclear whether the Beijing deployed the rig for genuine commercial reasons or as part of strategy of staking out its territorial claims in the region. When it announced the deployment, Beijing said it would withdraw it on Aug. 15. The deployment of the rig was seen as a highly provocative move by China, which it claims nearly all of the South China Sea, bringing it into conflict with Vietnam, the Philippines and other nations. Beijing’s growing economic Read More …

Campaigners and leaders including the mayor of New York had called for the Philippine-born 33-year-old’s release from detention in a Texas border town, some urging President Barack Obama to intervene in an incident that threatened to inflame an already fiery immigration debate. Vargas has been in the southern US state to highlight the plight of tens of thousands of children from Central America who have flooded across the border and into the United States in the past year in search of a better life, his campaign group Define American said. A high-profile campaigner for the rights of fellow immigrants, he was detained at the airport in McAllen, where he planned to board a flight to Los Angeles, before being freed later in the day, authorities and Define American said. ‘Generosity of American people’ “As an unaccompanied child migrant myself, I came Read More …
