Back from the future: The futuristic Honda Click 125i

MANILA, Philippines – The future is here! And it has two wheels, a smart engine, loads of fuel-efficient features, and a futuristic swagger. If it had more bells and whistles, you might mistake it for the light bikes from Tron. This is the new Honda Click 125i. I’m no motorcycle expert, but the Honda Click does have me interested with its futuristic offerings. Its safety and security features make it safe enough for a two-wheel beginner, but I would expect the adept to try it out more without a moment’s notice because of the higher specs. The Honda Click 125i is so named for its liquid-cooled 4-stroke, SOHC 2-valve 125cc PGM-Fi engine. This system is Honda’s new Enhanced Smart Power (or eSP) system. The Click is the first bike to use this engine and system. It results in lower friction, lower vibration, improved durability, reduced noise, and higher fuel efficiency. The quieter drive is complemented by an ACG starter system which consumes less power for a smoother engine start. The fuel efficiency is from the Idling Stop feature that partially shuts the engine down while stationary. It uses a swing-back motor which keeps the engine rotating, instead of shutting it off, during idle stops so you get a running start when you run the engine again. As for power, the Click runs with 11.4 ps @ 8,500 rpm with a torque of 11.16 Nm @ 6,500 rpm. The scooter’s suspension is a telescopic front and a unit swing rear. Its Read More …

Red carpet review, Oscars 2015: 50 shades of yay

Julianne Moore Therese: Despite her winning performance in Still Alice, this is not a winning dress. But Karl Lagerfeld designed it especially for her, and she carries it off with her customary grace. Celine: This Chanel dress cuts her body with awkward lines. AP MANILA, Philippines – In seeming tribute to the most-tittered-about movie of the year, there was a lot of gray on the red carpet, sported by Oscar host Neil Patrick Harris and the likes of Laura Dern and Chrissy Teigen, but bolder colors ruled the Oscar runway, most notably red, white, black, and a surprise entry: green. (Or maybe not so surprising, considering that America’s been in the grip of a bitter winter and they’re probably longing to see signs of spring.) Watching the red carpet was more fun than watching the ceremony itself, which was a politically correct snooze-fest, the highlights of which were John Travolta’s “my bad, let’s put it behind us” moment with Idina Menzel, and NPH coming out (pun not intended) onstage clad in nothing but his tighty whities, putting a whole new spin on doing a “Birdman.” But, even if some of the dresses were not our tempo, “everything is awesome” in Hollywood, Jack Black’s gloom-and-doom song number notwithstanding.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2015: Designers tell the story of the dress at NYFW

Diane Von Furstenberg Diane Von Furstenberg told a story of seduction through variations of the wrap dress, as well as sexy ’70s style. Diane Von Furstenberg and Victoria Beckham both built their businesses around the most basic item of a female wardrobe — the dress. The former introduced the wrap dress to the lexicon and the latter gave women confidence and power through polished and sophisticated body-con dresses. And so for fall 2015, Von Furstenberg and Beckham chose to further explore the item that solidified their roles in the industry. Diane Von Furstenberg Seduction was the main theme of the Diane Von Furstenberg show and the set, with its lace backdrop and red lighting, easily gave off a boudoir atmosphere. Out came variations of the wrap dress, from the opening version — an ivory jersey dress with a black sash worn by Kendall Jenner — to exuberant floral and lip prints. Lace was seen throughout the collection too: as in a wrap dress completely spun from Chantilly lace, a black floor-length gown with a plunging V-neckline and a red shirt dress with a men’s-style, contrast-color cuffs and collar. Lace was also spun into the other motif of the collection, that of women in the workplace, women ruling the world. A tuxedo-style romper was spliced with lace on the side to give it a feminine spin and a men’s waistcoat was reworked as a dress with sleeves and a skirt of Chantilly lace. The show relied heavily on a color palette Read More …

THE Social Security System (SSS) membership, including overseas Filipino workers, increased by 11.5 percent in the past four years to 32.1 million in 2014 from 28.8 million in 2010. Data showed that employed members increased by 18.1 percent in the past four years to 23.5 million in 2014 from 19.9 million in 2010. Bugante, SSS vice president for public affairs, said during a press briefing at Grand Men Seng Hotel on Monday night that the increase in SSS membership shows that more and more Filipinos are getting proper jobs brought by the recent economic growth in the country. In order to address the increasing number of members, SSS is set to open five new branches and another five service offices within this year. However, Bugante said she still does not have the information as to where these branches and service office will be set up. Recently, they opened their SSS Ilustre Branch at Giasano Grand Mall, which offers all of the SSS services except for their e-center. For 2014, Bugante said they have opened a total of 25 branches, 13 service offices, and three foreign representatives in Muscat, Oman; Tokyo, Japan; and Toronto, Canada. St. Paul’s ties that bind

St. Paul College, Quezon City Class of 1965’s reunion. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The members of High School Class 1965 of St. Paul College Quezon City could hardly believe it. “What? It’s going to be 50 years since we graduated from high school!! You’re kidding!!” Well, part of it was denial that we’re that much older. Another part of it, or I’d like to think a large part of it, was because we had been regularly bonding with each other, enjoying each other’s company, and sharing each other’s joys and sorrows for years so that it was almost like it was just a short while ago that we left SPCQ and went on to college and beyond. Yes, despite the inevitable number of classmates who had somehow disappeared from the radar, there was still a group that managed to stay in touch. Here in Metro Manila, the “locals” would meet to mark the usual milestones — Christmas, birthdays, and visits from balikbayan classmates. The same applied for classmates living abroad, mostly in the US. What’s more, we didn’t allow geographical barriers to deter us — there would be some reunions where the “locals” would fly to the US to be with both the East and West Coast classmates. It was no wonder then, that we all looked forward to celebrating our golden jubilee. In the course of monthly meetings, countless email traffic, plus Facebook, Skype, Facetime and Viber tete-a-tetes, our vague ideas turned into semi-coherent plans, then our plans began to take Read More …
