Nora Aunor: PNoy, resign!

MANILA, Philippines — Superstar Nora Aunor joined the rights group Migrante in calling for the resignation of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. The group gathered on Tuesday to commemorate the 20th death anniversary of the overseas worker Flor Contemplacion, who was subject to death sentence after the death of the four-year-old child she’s babysitting. “Tama na, sobra na! Noynoy, mag-resign ka na!” she said during her speech at the rally, aired in “TV Patrol” on Tuesday. Nora, who starred played the titular role in the 1995 film “The Flor Cotemplacion Story,” also blamed the government’s inequitable labor policy and the lack of jobs in the country for Filipinos’ decision to work abroad. “Nanatiling hungkag at ilusyon ang matuwid na daan at ang pagpapakitang tao ni Noynoy, na hindi na natin aasahan na magpapatupad pa ng matinonng programa para sa mga OFW,” she said. “Ang totoo po, si Noynoy mismo ang pangunahing tagabenta, pahamak at pahirap ng ating mga kababayan,” she further adds. Entertainment ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 The Superstar said she doesn’t bear ill feelings toward the president’s decision before not to include her in the list of nominees for the National Artist for Film. “Ang importante sa akin ay ang mga sobra ng kapalpakan sa mga desisyon niya sa kanyang pamahalaan,” she replied when asked why she calls for the president’s resignation.

Experts believe 'Don Quixote' author remains found

In this Jan. 24, 2015 file photo, a team of archaeologists and anthropologists take notes after starting the excavation work after identifying three unrecorded and unidentified graves in the chapel’s crypt of the closed order Convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians in Madrid’s historic Barrio de las Letras, or Literary Quarter, Spain. AP/Daniel Ochoa de Olza, File MADRID — Experts believe bone remains found in a Madrid convent include those of Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes but are unable to identify them beyond doubt, they said Tuesday. Releasing the latest details of the near year-long search, forensic anthropologist Francisco Etxeberria said investigators’ work led them to believe that Cervantes’ bones are among the remains of 15 bodies found in the crypt of the Barefoot Trinitarians, but they were unable to isolate them or prove definitively which belonged to the author of the Spanish language’s most revered work, “Don Quixote.” Etxeberria said scientists would try to extract DNA profiles for the bones found, but were not sure if this would be possible. Cervantes had no known descendants. Cervantes is known to have been buried in the convent in 1616 but construction work involving the convent in the following years made it difficult to ascertain exactly where his bones lay. Authorities had hoped that the search, which cost some 160,000 euros ($168,000) and attracted much media attention, would allow them to do the great author justice by giving him a properly signposted burial site. Investigators believed they had solid clues to work with Read More …

Members of House panel on BBL seek postponement of executive sessions

At least 39 of the 75-member ad hoc committee tackling the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) in the House of Representatives have signed a manifesto calling for the postponement of next month’s closed-door deliberations on the measure until the chamber revives its probe into the Mamasapano police operation. Zamboanga City Rep. Celso Lobregat, one of the signatories to the manifesto, said he and his colleagues plan on gathering the signatures of two-thirds of the committee members, or a total of 50 lawmakers.  The panel is set to resume executive sessions on the Bangsamoro bill on April 6,  over a month after it was indefinitely postponed due to the outcry over the January 25 Mamasapano clash. Committee chair Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez plans to hold a two-week long closed-door discussions on the bill,  have the members vote for its approval on April 16.  However, Rodriguez will be forced to shelve the executive sessions if two-thirds of the committee will object to it. “Paano siya (Rodriguez) mag-uumpisa [ng hearing]? He can proceed if he wants to but that will not recognized as a committee hearing,” Abakada party-list Rep. Jonathan dela Cruz said.  GMA News Online was unable to reach Rodriguez for comment as of posting time.  Lobregat said that while he is not opposed to the Bangsamoro bill’s passage, he believes the ad hoc committee should only resume its deliberations until the House resumes and completes its investigation on the Mamasapano clash.
