President Aquino raises the hand of DILG Secretary Mar Roxas to the shower of confetti after Aquino endorsed Roxas for the presidential race at the Club Filipino in Greenhills on Friday. Aquino cited Roxas’ record and pointed to him as the best bet to continue the “Daang Matuwid” (Straight Path). (MNS photo) (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Saturday said that Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II will resign from his post following an endorsement from President Benigno Aquino III for the 2016 presidential elections. “Of course, that is a given. He will not stay in office so he won’t be accused of taking advantage of his position. Certainly, he will not do that,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said over state-run Radyo ng Bayan. “What he is actually preparing for is the transition already to whoever will lead the DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government) next,” she explained. Valte, however, could not confirm who will replace the Interior Secretary. Roxas is expected to recommend names for the position. Valte said Roxas wants to have a smooth transition, especially for the priority projects of the DILG, including the Oplan Lambat Sibat of the Philippine National Police. Members of the opposition have already called for the resignation of Roxas, who was praised by Aquino on Friday for his integrity. (MNS)
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte MANILA (Mabuhay) – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he is happy for Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas after President Benigno Aquino III endorsed his presidential bid for the 2016 elections. “I’m happy for him, I hope he makes it,” Duterte said. The mayor, however, declined to name who he will support in the 2016 elections, as both Vice-President Jejomar Binay and Senator Grace Poe are his friends. “If there is really no need for me to come out and support a particular candidate, I’d rather not,” he said. “Everytime you mention a name you always disappoint the other guy,” he explained. Duterte reiterated anew that he is not running for president in 2016. The mayor was the guest speaker last night at a gathering of the Chamber of Commerce in Davao. (MNS)
President Benigno S. Aquino III inspects the facilities of the temporary shelter at the Cogon Relocation Site in Barangay Cogon, Guiuan during the visit to the province of Eastern Samar on Friday (November 07). More than 200 Yolanda survivors will benefit from the 133 housing units. It was in Guiuan where super typhoon Yolanda, the strongest typhoon ever recorded, made its first landfall on November 08, 2013. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The Philippines has not done enough to rebuild after Super Typhoon Haiyan, as thousands remain in shanties without power or water for nearly two years, a United Nations representative said Saturday. Many storm survivors in the central region have had to endure relocating to evacuation camps up to three times since Haiyan struck in 2013, and the sub-standard housing leaves them vulnerable to future typhoons, said Chaloka Beyani, UN special rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons. “While the government is to be commended in terms of its immediate responses, its attention to ensuring sustainable durable solutions for IDPs (internally displaced persons) remains inadequate to date,” Beyani said in a statement posted on the UN website. Beyani was in the Philippines in late July to check on the government’s handling of people displaced by Haiyan and by fighting between the military and Muslim rebels in the south. Aside from falling short of safety standards, the wood-and-tin “bunkhouses” also leave women and girls vulnerable to sexual abuse and early pregnancy, Beyani said. The box-like shanties also rob Read More …
Vice President Jejomar Binay and Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla raise their hands during the covenant signing between United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) and Partido Magdalo at Kawit Cavite on Thursday. Remulla expressed support for Binay’s candidacy for president in the 2016 elections. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is among six individuals being considered as Vice President Jejomar Binay’s running mate in the 2016 presidential elections, the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) confirmed Saturday. “I will have to admit, kasi lumabas na yan, na kasama siya,” UNA interim president and Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said. Tiangco said the search committee is looking at six names as possible running mate of Binay when he seeks the presidency in 2016. Tiangco, however, refused to name names, saying: “Kasi ang nangyayari pag sinasabi namin yung pangalan, first of all, it’s unfair to the others na hindi napangalanan. Number 2, pag nagbigay kasi kami ng pangalan… ang lumalabas minsan yun ang gusto namin. Di ba iba naman yung ‘kino-konsidera?’” He said UNA has a self-imposed deadline of September 30 for Binay’s vice presidential candidate and the party’s senatorial slate. Meanwhile, Tiangco reiterated that they are not threatened by the candidacy of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, saying they are confident that the Filipino people will continue to support Binay, given his track record in government. The UNA official, however, admitted that President Benigno Aquino III’s endorsement of Roxas can boost the interior secretary’s presidential bid. More than that, he said, Read More …
Boots Anson Roa (MNS Photo) Boots Anson Roa is honored to be tapped to play Lola Basyang in TV5’s reimagined version of the classic children’s stories. In the past, Lola Basyang has been played by various actresses: Rosa Mia in the Sampaguita Pictures’ version in the 60s, comedian Chichay in the Regal Films’ version in the 80s, and Luz Fernandez on TV. On radio, it ran for several years in the 50s and was one of the hits of the heydays of radio during that era, along with the soaps “Ilaw ng Tahanan” and “Dr. Ramon Selga” and the horror hit, “Gabi ng Lagim”. “I’m really glad na Direk Perci Intalan considered me for the role kasi bagay na talaga akong Lola Basyang now that I’m 70 years old,” she says. “I have nine grand children now and my husband (Atty. King Rodrigo) has eight, so bale 17 na lahat ang apo ko. But today’s Lola Basyang is so different kasi high tech na siya. Bale tatlo lang ang apo niya rito. One is with her in person, but two are abroad. One is in Guam and one is in Japan, pero kinukuwentuhan pa rin niya through Skype. So, global na siya in the age of the Internet, but her stories continue to impart good values and tradition.” Did she ever think she’d play to get a title role again? “No, kasi kaming senior stars, accepted na naming the networks get us mainly to give strong support to the new Read More …
