Karla Estrada to host morning show?

Karla Estrada (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Karla Estrada quickly dispelled rumors that she will be hosting a morning show, replacing her friend Kris Aquino, who announced that she will be taking a hiatus from show business. “Tigilan natin ‘yan. Hindi totoo ‘yan,” Estrada said in an interview. “At saka hindi mapapalitan si mareng Kris dahil napakagaling noon. walang makakapantay doon. Kanya-kanya tayo ng style. Kris Aquino is Kris Aquino. My God, hindi nga sumagi sa isip ko ‘yan. Nakakaloka kayo.” Estrada signed an exclusive contract with ABS-CBN and part of the deal is that she will be hosting a new game show. But asked if she’s open to do a morning show, Estrada said: “Sa mga offer-offer, wala itong kinalaman sa kahit kanino and huwag na nating (bahiran). Ngayon nga lang dumating, kung makabahid naman kayo, grabe. Bigyan natin ng chance muna na makahinga na magpasaya, ‘di ba? Tignan natin kung saan tayo.” Estrada said she supports Aquino’s decision to take a well-deserved break for herself and her family. “I think she deserves it. Kasi masyadong matagal na din siya at kailangan na niya din ng pahinga dahil sakitin ‘yan si Mareng Kris. Matalino naman siyang tao so kung anuman ang desisyon niya, alam niyang tama ‘yon para sa kanya at para sa mga anak niya,” Estrada said.(MNS)

It’s because of this money laundering case filed by the AMLC before the Department of Justice that has prevented Deguito from spilling the beans, lawyer Ferdinand Topacio said in a press statement on Thursday. The case was filed on Friday, the day Deguito was barred from leaving the Philippines to go to an alleged vacation trip to Japan. “There is a conspiracy here that boggles the mind involving extremely wealthy, powerful and well-connected individuals, but we are confident that the Senate will not spare anyone, no matter his or her status and stature in the banking community and in Philippine society, so that the incident under investigation will not be Read More …

Why KC is not keen on working with mom Sharon

KC Concepcion and Sharon Cuneta (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) -– KC Concepcion is not too keen about working with her mother Sharon Cuneta on a movie. “I think it’s too close for comfort to be working with her sa movie project,” she said, noting that she grew up watching her act while on the movie set. “It would be weird to do a movie with her. Pero we always see each other naman sa mga concert events ng ABS-CBN or something. Wala pa kaming napapag-usapan,” she said. Concepcion, however, said she is excited to see Cuneta and her father, Gabby Concepcion, in a reunion project. “Siguro si mom and papa. Manonood pa ako,” she said, laughing. Cuneta and Concepcion were dubbed as the ‘80s movie power couple with movies like “Dear Heart” and “PS I Love You.” Their fan base grew larger when they eventually became a real-life couple. The two tied the knot in 1984 but their marriage didn’t last long. Cuneta is now married to former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, with whom she has two daughters and a son. (MNS)

RCBC officials feared for lives

$81 million laundered money that belonged to Bangladesh ends up in casinos RCBC –Jupiter Branch Manager Maia Santos-Deguito takes an oath before testifying during a Senate hearing on the US$81 million money-laundering scandal, at the Philippines Senate on Tuesday. Deguito was summoned to shed light on the Philippines’ biggest anti-money laundering case involving money stolen from the central bank of Bangladesh.(MNS photo) Manila, Philippines | AFP | – A Philippine banker shifted $81 million stolen from Bangladesh’s central bank into various accounts because she feared for her life, her colleague told a parliamentary investigation on Thursday. Maia Deguito, manager of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp (RCBC) branch in Manila’s financial district, could only muster a blank stare when discussing the dirty money, said Romualdo Agarrado, a senior officer in the same branch. “She just looked at me with a blank stare and said: I would rather do this than get killed, or my family,” Agarrado told the Senate inquiry. In a scam that shocked the financial world, unknown hackers tried to steal around $1 billion from Bangladesh’s deposits with the US Federal Reserve in New York on February 5. They got away with $81 million – sending it to the RCBC branch managed by Deguito – before the scam was uncovered. Authorities have lost track of the money, with significant amounts believed to have been laundered through Philippine casinos. Although low-level bank officers in Manila have been implicated, no-one yet knows who was behind the heist. Acting on a request Read More …

The group vowed to expose practices that directly use public funds, resources, machineries and personnel in support of a particular candidate.(MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – The Commission on Elections will really have to print voting receipts for the May national elections. This was after the high court affirmed on Thursday an earlier decision compelling the poll body to activate the voter verification paper audit trail feature of the vote counting machines. In a media briefing, SC Public Information Office chief and spokesman said the tribunal voted unanimously to deny the Comelec motion seeking to reverse the SC’s March 8 decision. Associate Justices Antonio Carpio and Lucas Bersamin were on leave, while Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta, who did not attend the oral arguments, did not leave his vote. Responding immediately after the announcement, former Sen. Richard Gordon, who filed the petition, said the Comelec does not need additional time to just to activate the voter verification paper audit trail (VVPAT) and make changes in the machines’ source code. “Hindi mahirap ayusin ang source code. Nagawa nila nung February 8 and 9. Pinalitan nila [ang source code] dahil may hindi nagtugma [sa machines]… Ginawa rin nila iyon noong automated elections noong 2010. Nadiskubre nilang may diperensiya. Nabilang at napalitan nila ang makina, 76,000. Napalitan lahat ng CF cards. Nakakagulat iyon. Kaya malakas ang loob ko na kaya iyan,” he said. Gordon Read More …

Al Gore warns: Climate change may bring stronger typhoons to PHL

Aerial shot of the province of which was heavily damaged by super typhoon Yolanda (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – The Philippines may face stronger typhoons due to warmer temperatures, US Vice President Al Gore said Wednesday in a Climate Reality Project forum in Manila. “Warmer oceans makes ocean-based storms much stronger,” Gore said. He explained that 93 percent of the heat trapped in the atmosphere due to excessive carbon emission heats the ocean. “Supertyphoon Yolanda crossed over parts of the Pacific Ocean that were three percent warmer than normal and it became the most powerful and most destructive storm to ever make a landfall,” Gore said. “I am not here simply to do a lecture…I’m here also to ask you to be part of the solution. This is a moment in human history unlike any other…to have an obligation for those who come after us that is fundamentally different…” Al Gore, Manila Philippines (Al Gore in Manila Youtube video capture) One of the strongest typhoons recorded to make landfall, Yolanda killed over 6,000 people and affected over a million families in November 2013. Last Saturday, Gore went to visit Tacloban City, one of the places that suffered the greatest damage due to the typhoon. Gore explained how warmer temperature evaporates more moisture in the atmosphere, leading to longer – and more powerful – precipitation, leading to more flooding especially in areas with particularly low elevation. “If we put much more water vapor in the sky and much more heat in Read More …

Chiz says gov’t should act against land-grabbing

Presidential candidate Grace Poe, her running mate Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero, and veteran lawyer Lorna Kapunan (extreme left), acknowledge crowd after the tandem endorse Kapunan’s senatorial bid on Friday (Oct. 23) at the Balay Kalinaw in UP-Diliman, Quezon City. (MNS photo) Vice-presidential race frontrunner Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero said it is high time the government seriously address the problem of land-grabbing and stop individuals or groups from illegally and forcibly taking the land of others, including those owned by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). “Land-grabbing involving both public and private lands should be stopped and land grabbers should be dealt with accordingly,” said Escudero, who is running as independent under the banner “Gobyernong may Puso” alongside leading presidential candidate Sen. Grace Poe. Escudero said he received numerous complaints regarding land grabbing, particularly in Antipolo City, where property owners, mostly OFWs, lost their lands by force, intimidation or misinformation. “Land grabbing seems to be rampant in Antipolo City and yet authorities are not doing anything,” Escudero said, as he lamented that most of the victims are OFWs. “It is unacceptable that the properties bought by OFWs with their hard-earned money accumulated over the years of working abroad, go away just like that,” he said. Escudero, meanwhile, vowed to take back all government-owned lands illegally encroached by land-grabbing syndicates and use them for future socialized housing projects, if he and Poe are elected. “We will retrieve all state lands in adverse possession of land mafias across the country and turn them into housing projects Read More …
