A major milestone in the construction of the $285 million Pechanga Resort & Casino expansion was reached today. Dozens of construction members, elected officials, dignitaries, Pechanga Tribal members and Pechanga Team Members gathered to watch the topping out of the Tribe’s massive addition that will make their resort/casino the largest on the West Coast. The mammoth expansion is now more than halfway complete. This topping out included crews 14 stories up pouring the last 710 tons of concrete into the upper framing of the new hotel tower that will house 568 rooms and suites. A giant, concrete-filled bucket the size of a mid-size car was hoisted via crane to the top of the south hotel wing and its contents poured into the structure. A small, sacred oak tree also hitched a ride onto the top of building with the bucket, and was placed atop the tower as a symbol of strength and perseverance. The ceremonial tree will be planted on the resort grounds at the expansion’s completion. “Countless people, as well as more than 2,500 construction trades workers, have labored tirelessly to keep construction on schedule allowing us to celebrate today. The Philippine jeepney received the international spotlight as the popular British band Coldplay chose to ride it on their way to their “A Head Full of Dreams” concert at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds. Surprised concertgoers started posting photos on social media when they saw frontman Chris Martin and other band members riding the jeepney, the country’s trademark public vehicle. The jeepney has become a Philippine icon characterized by its chrome-plated ornaments, colorful designs and accessories and the close sitting arrangement are said to mirror the Filipino culture of close relations, and the vibrant energy of the people. The jeepney was developed by Filipinos, and popularized by Cavite’s Sarao family from abandoned U.S. military jeeps at the end of World War II. The University of the Philippines Diliman has setup the new home of Project NOAH, the successful hazard and risk monitoring program previously developed and run jointly with the government’s Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Now known as the University of the Philippines Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (UP-NOAH), the program comes back to UP as a multidisciplinary research center housed in the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences and directly under the Office of the President in UP. “In a sense, Project NOAH is coming home,” said UP President Danilo L. Concepcion in a UP publication, noting that the project was conceived by the DOST with the help of UP professors, led by its executive director Dr. Alfredo Mahar Lagmay from the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), and that most of the project’s staff have come from UP. Project NOAH began as a research program under the DOST in 2012 following the Typhoon Sendong tragedy in 2011. Having delivered its research results and after two extensions, the project was scheduled to end when UP stepped in to continue it. “The project’s benefits go far beyond its research value,” said Concepcion. “It has literally been a lifesaver for millions of Filipinos threatened by natural disasters like floods, landslides, and storm surges. Authored by University of the Philippines professor Clarita Carlos, the pioneering book entitled “Population Ageing in the Philippines, Issues and Challenges” presents facts and figures on the rapidly increasing ageing population in the Philippines. Professor Carlos during the launch of the book at The Podium said that senior citizens have the power to elect the next president of the country. The prominent academic said that anyone vying for the presidency should tap into the 60 years and old and above age group because they will play a major role in electing the president in the next election, according to the SM release. “The population of the elderly in the Philippines will be more than 10 percent in 2020, thus political leaders should think of reaching out to (them). Not only is this mandated in the Philippine Constitution (under Article XIII) but the number is also significant in electing the next president of this country by 2022,” Carlos said. She pointed out that the elderly population in the Philippines is increasing faster than the growth of the population.
