SM City Cauayan recently launched its 342-panel solar power facility

SM will next complete its solar power fitting for five more solar powered malls – SM City Dasmarinas SM City Trece Martires, SM City Olongapo, SM City Tuguegarao Downtown, and SM Seaside City Cebu.

SM City Cauayan launched its 342-panel solar power facility capable of producing approximately 105,678kWh annually – enough to light up 9,700 10-watt light bulbs or fully charge 26,358 cellphones.

SM Mall of Asia inaugurated in 2016 a 2.7-MW solar power facility almost twice the capacity of SM City North Edsa’s1.5-MW solar rooftop installation.

SM launched its first solar rooftop project in the country in 2014 at SM City North Edsa, the first mall in the Philippines to become solar powered.

SM estimates that by the end of this phase, “SM will have approximately 33,000 solar panels capable of producing 8.9 megawatts of electricity – enough to fully charge around 1.3 million cellphones, light up 890,000 10-watt LED lamps, run 297,000 30-watt electric fans, or provide power to almost 6000 households.”

“SM Prime has always been committed to reduce greenhouse emissions and maximize energy efficiency in our malls. This is just one of the many renewable projects we have been doing and we will continue with finding ways on how to make our operations more environmentally sound and sustainable,” said SM’s Hans T. Sy during the Memorandum of Agreement signing ceremony between SM Prime and Solar Philippines in 2014.

SM Supermalls’ partner in promoting eco-friendly shopping in the country is Solar Philippines, the largest developer of solar rooftop power plants in Southeast Asia.

UNICEF, SM encourage parents reading to children

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and SM Prime Holdings are encouraging parents to read to their children to address the declining reading habits of Filipinos. UNICEF Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Martin Porter spoke at the National Children’s Book Reading Day event at the SM Mall of Asia, emphasizing the role of parents in developing healthy reading habits in children. “My parents used to read to me when I was a little kid and it helped develop in me the habit of reading,” the UNICEF officer shared. SM Cares Director of the Program on Children and Youth, Mr. Royston Cabunag affirmed the love of reading is developed early on and parents play a key role in its development. “Research has shown that children whose parents read to them and who themselves read regularly develop the love of reading. This is the reason why parents should make time to be with their children, read to them so that it becomes habit-forming,” the SM Cares director pointed out. According to the National Book Development Board (NBDB) Readership Survey of 2012, 88% or a Total of 49.2 million Filipino adults read though it is declining: 94% in 2003, 92% in 2007 and 88% in 2012. The NBDB 2012 Readership Survey also shows that more and more Filipinos are beginning to read NSB at a much younger age, starting as early as 0 to 6 years old, with the majority of adult readers saying they started reading NSB between the ages of 7 Read More …

SM publishes pioneering book on PHL’s ageing population

SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, has published a pioneering book on the value of the ageing population of the Philippines. Authored by University of the Philippines professor Clarita Carlos, the pioneering book entitled “Population Ageing in the Philippines, Issues and Challenges” presents facts and figures on the rapidly increasing ageing population in the Philippines. Professor Carlos during the launch of the book at The Podium said that senior citizens have the power to elect the next president of the country. The prominent academic said that anyone vying for the presidency should tap into the 60 years and old and above age group because they will play a major role in electing the president in the next election, according to the SM release. “The population of the elderly in the Philippines will be more than 10 percent in 2020, thus political leaders should think of reaching out to (them). Not only is this mandated in the Philippine Constitution (under Article XIII) but the number is also significant in electing the next president of this country by 2022,” Carlos said. She pointed out that the elderly population in the Philippines is increasing faster than the growth of the population. In 2000, there were 4.6 million senior citizens or about 6 percent of the population. In 2010, the number grew to 6 million or 6.9 percent of the population. By 2022, the elderly is expected to be around 12 million which is a significant factor in the election Read More …

Linda Atayde: Lessons Learned from an Unexpected Journey

“Thank God, she got in touch with me!” Those were the words uttered by Linda as she expressed her joy on the day SM Foundation turned over a new two-storey, four classroom building to the Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School in Baguio City late last year. It’s been almost 15 years now since Carmen Linda Atayde was invited by SM Investments Corporation’s Vice-Chairman, Ms. Tessie Sy-Coson, to join SM Foundation as Executive Director for Education Programs. “Tatang always believed that education was the best defense against poverty,” shared Linda. “He always said that if we could just help one child finish college, he or she then can uplift their family out of poverty.” SM Foundation gives college and technical-vocational scholarship grants to deserving but underprivileged youth. It also helps provide access to quality public education by building and donating fully-furnished public school buildings. Linda recalled, “Even then, Mrs. Coson knew that I filled my weekends and free time doing work for the community. I already had scholars of my own then.” At that time, Linda felt that she wasn’t ready to assume the post. But little by little, she realized that heading the education program of SM Foundation was simply like being a second mother to the thousands of youth who have hopes and dreams yet to be fulfilled. “I simply knew it was another path I had to take,” declared Linda with much conviction. SM mall did not comply with 2013 security pact – police

Robbers use hammers to steal jewelry in SM North EDSA. Security personnel of SM North EDSA cordon off the crime scene where a so-called “martilyo gang” struck on Sunday night, stealing jewelry on display and causing shoppers to panic. Jun Veneracion, GMA News Mall security measures forged nearly a year ago in the aftermath of another martilyo gang heist were not implemented and may have made the jewelry robbery on Sunday at the SM North EDSA mall easier for the suspects to carry out, the Philippine National Police said. PNP officials said procedures on the sale of hardware and the provision of improved CCTV security camera systems were among the measures that were apparently not taken seriously. The PNP said hardware purchased inside the malls were supposed to have been turned over to buyers outside the mall premises. Higher-resolution CCTV systems and constant monitoring of security videos were also agreed upon months ago, but the PNP said the poor quality of the video footage of the heist last Sunday is a clear indicator of the lack of compliance. Grainy video of the Sunday robbery and a receipt showed that the suspects used a hammer and a crowbar purchased in the mall. The MOA, which was forged with the Mall Security Managers Association, provided that shoppers who bought tools like hammers  would claim their purchased items outside the mall, Raffy Tima reported on GMA News TV’s State of the Nation with Jessica Soho Monday evening. The agreement was struck in the Read More …

SM property units to delist next month

MANILA, Philippines – Two property units of mall and banking conglomerate SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) will exit the local bourse early next month. The delisting of SM Development Corp. (SMDC) and Highlands Prime Inc. (HPI) is in line with the consolidation of Henry Sy’s property companies. In a memorandum, the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) said its board of directors approved the voluntary delisting filed by HPI and SMDC. PSE also ordered the “delisting of the shares of the companies from the official registry of the PSE effective Nov. 5.” Early last month, upscale resort developer HPI and condominium builder SMDC filed a petition to exit the local stock exchange. Shares of both companies were suspended from trading as their public ownership level fell below the 10 percent minimum public float requirement. Privately held SM Land Inc. earlier completed the tender offer for shares of SMDC and HPI “as a part of its efforts to reorganize and consolidate the real estate holdings and interest of the companies that are controlled by the SM Group.” Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 In May, SMIC announced the merger of its real estate businesses, creating the most valuable property firm in Southeast Asia.
