Koronadal City breaks 2 Guinness World Records

Koronadal City in South Cotabato has made two new Guinness World Records as part of their effort to promote motorcycle road safety.

Koronadal made the new record for Most Engines Started Simultaneously with 3,184 people and motorbikes.

The same event scored the 2 nd world record for Most Motorcycle Horns Sounded Simultaneously done by 3,177 people.

The two new Guinness records for the Philippines were attempted on April 29, 2017 with a total of 3,336 motorcycle riders converged along a stretch of the main highway.

The event was led by Koronadal City Mayor Peter Miguel, LGU-City of Koronadal, Petron, National Federation of Motorcycle Clubs, Inc. and South Cotabato Motorcycle Club.

Ben Backhouse, head of records management for Asia Pacific of Guinness World Records, confirmed the approval of the new titles in an email to Mayor Miguel:

“We are thrilled to inform you that your application for most engines started simultaneously has been successful and you are now the Guinness World Records title holder!…Your second record attempt (most motorcycle horns sounded simultaneously) has been approved as well. Congratulations on an amazing event, you are officially amazing.”

“At this point I would like to say it’s been a pleasure working with you and I wish you the best of luck with any future record attempts,” Backhouse added.

The city government had paid around P850,000 to Guinness to facilitate the world record bid, revealed the Philippine News Agency release.

The historic world record bid involved visiting and local motorcycle enthusiasts, lined up in clusters from the city’s roundball area, occupying more than a kilometer of the General Santos Drive.

The world record attempts highlighted the culmination of the city’s first-ever Motorcycle Festival held from April 22 to 29.

Envoy wants UK-Phl trade to grow 5x in 3 years

MANILA, Philippines – British Ambassador to the Philippines Asif Ahmad on Monday said he is looking at a 5-billion-pound (P374 billion) bilateral trade between the United Kingdom (UK) and the Philippines in the next three years. “My minister said I need to make it 5 billion (British pounds) before I leave in three and a half years time. So I need to work really hard,” Ahmad said. Currently, trade between the two countries stands at 1 billion pounds, he said. Ahmad said bBritish companies are looking into investing in retail, energy and infrastructure in the Philippines. ”There is so much more that could come here. That’s why I keep talking about infrastructure. If this country can really get some (infrastructure); and there (are) some big announcements (on infrastructure projects) already. We want more of that. More roads, a serious look at ports, airports, so really we can make it faster to get things that are not here… That requires organization, arrangement of transport,” he said. FedEx delivers P430M worth of aid to typhoon-hit areas

Ground crew receiving the relief supplies which arrived from FedEx regional hub at the Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, U.S. MANILA, Philippines – FedEx Corp. has teamed up with Direct Relief and Heart to Heart International to deliver over $10 million (P430 million) worth of relief aid and medical supplies to communities ravaged by Super Typhoon “Yolanda.” The shipment, containing about 90,000 kilos of personal care and hygiene items, pharmaceuticals, and first aid kits departed from Los Angeles on November 23 and arrived at the Mactan International Airport in Cebu on November 25. “FedEx team members around the globe, in Asia Pacific and in particular the Philippines,are committed to assisting with the recovery effort,” said David L. Cunningham Jr., president, Asia Pacific, FedEx Express. “FedEx has a long history of connecting non-profit organizations with communities in need, especially in the wake of a disaster of this scale. THERE HAS BEEN much talk about how rapid growth markets (RGMs) are expected to be the drivers of the global economy over the next decade. RGMs are countries that emerged from the 2008 recession with minimum damage and which project significant growth. They include a number of economies from the Asia Pacific region. While this is certainly cause for cautious optimism, it also raises the concern that the pressure for these markets to generate growth may also increase the risk of fraud, bribery, and corruption.

Global air traffic rises in May amid Asia Pacific slowdown

MANILA, Philippines – Global passenger traffic grew at a faster rate of 5.6 percent in May amid the slowdown in the Asia Pacific region including the Philippines, data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showed. IATA director general and chief executive officer Tony Tyler said air travel continued to expand at a healthy rate as overall demand rose 5.6 percent while capacity climbed 5.2 percent, pushing the load factor up to 78.1 percent. “Global economic performance remains a concern, however, demand for air travel continues to expand. The primary driver is growing demand for connectivity to emerging markets,” Tyler stressed. Data showed that May international traffic passenger demand rose 5.7 percent compared to the year-ago period amid a 5.6- percent rise in capacity resulting to a load factor of 77 percent. International traffic of Asia-Pacific airlines rose at a slower pace of 3.7 percent in May compared to the year-ago period but this was more than offset by a 5.5-percent rise in capacity resulting to a 1.3-percent decline in load factor to 74.1 percent. “The softness in demand is consistent with falls in business confidence in major Asian economies as well as a slowdown in trade growth momentum. In particular gross domestic product (GDP) growth in China did not meet expectations in the first quarter and business confidence has slipped to levels indicating contraction in manufacturing activity,” Tyler explained.
