PLDT unit to provide high speed connectivity to Koreans in Phl

MANILA, Philippines – PLDT Alpha Enterprise, a unit of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), has tied up with IT.Corea Inc. to provide integrated connectivity service to the growing Korean community and businesses in the country. Jovy Hernandez, first vice president of PLDT and head of Alpha Enterprise, said the partnership would allow Koreans in the country to avail and communicate their information technology (IT) requirements without the language constraints from coordinating with local firms. “By tapping PLDT’s robust international and domestic high speed fiber network, IT.Corea will be able to provide the Philippine-based Korean community with business and communications solutions for their various needs,” Hernandez said. While many Koreans come to the Philippines as English language students, others have been attracted by business opportunities in various industries including manufacturing, import and export as well as food service. Globe sees better 2014 amid lower write-downs

MANILA, Philippines – Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. is looking at better earnings this year as the amount of one-time write-downs arising from its $790-million network and information technology modernization and transformation program is expected to be completed in the first quarter of the year. Ernest Cu, president and chief executive officer of Globe, said in an interview with reporters that the accelerated depreciation arising from its transformation program is expected to be completed within the first quarter of the year.  “There will some more left because I believe we still have in the first quarter some things to write off… The strength in the core business remains. It has been that way over the past three years and we expect it to continue that way,” Cu said. The company’s net income plunged 28 percent to P4.96 billion last year from P6.85 billion as accelerated depreciation charges related to assets affected by the modernization program jumped 78 percent to P9.06 billion resulting in a 17-percent rise in depreciation charges to P27.48 billion. However, Cu said the focus should be on the core income that measures the underlying financial performance of a company. Globe's H1 profits up by 13%

MANILA, Philippines – Profits of listed Globe Telecom, Inc. jumped by 13 percent from last year’s P5.7 billion to P6.4 billion in the first half of 2013, the company announced on Tuesday. “We are pleased with our first half performance despite the ongoing network and IT (information technology) modernization initiatives we are undertaking to serve our customers better,” Globe president and Chief Executive Officer Ernest Cu said. The company posted consolidated revenues of P44.5 billion, rising by 9 percent from the P40.8 billion in recorded in the first half of 2012. Revenues from Globe’s mobile business hit P35.8 billion, P2.6 billion higher than what it posted in the same period last year. Its broadband arm also generated P5.1 billion in revenues in the first semester, while its fixed line data revenues posted P2.3 billion. Globe’s total number of subscribers, meanwhile, reached 36.1 million in the first half of the year, 14 percent higher than what it recorded in the first of 2012. “We anticipate competition to escalate in the second semester given the gains we’ve realized in the past, and anticipated launches of in-demand mobile devices from Apple and Samsung in the second half of the year. IT solutions provider opens new Makati office

MANILA, Philippines – Information technology (IT) solutions provider Fritz and Macziol Asia Inc. has opened a new office in Makati City as it seeks to expand its workforce and operations. Ernesto Alfredo Cruz, Fritz and Macziol Asia senior vice president for sales and marketing, said in an interview that the company decided to move to Zuellig building in Makati City from the Net One Center in Taguig City as part of its expansion plan. “We are already expanding…We were occupying two floors (in Taguig) and we need more. We needed an additional floor but they couldn’t give us anymore,” he said. The size of the new office, he said, is double the space previously occupied by the company and would allow the company to hire more IT professionals. “Initially, in the workforce, we are targeting to add 30 to 40 percent,” he said. The company has around 70 employees at present.

Phl still among preferred sites for BPOs – US firm

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines remains among the preferred sites for business process outsourcing (BPO), according to a leading US-based BPO and information technology (IT) company. Shore Solutions Inc., one of the bigger players in the BPO business, said revenues from the BPO industry in the Philippines is expected to hit $16 billion this year, or almost 20 percent higher than the $13.4 billion last year. It noted that with increasing demand from prospective investors and subscribers, the industry would need at least 1.3 million direct hires by 2016 from 720,000 last year. “That should require 516,000 additional seats, and some 2.5 million square meters of additional office space,” Darcey Lalonde, Asia chief executive officer of Shore Solutions said in a forum yesterday. The industry employed over 720,000 in 2012, with another 1.6 million indirectly. Expansion has already been noted in the key urban centers outside Metro Manila such as Cebu and Davao. In Metro Manila, the major BPO centers are in Makati, Quezon City, Manila, Taguig and Mandaluyong.
