MANILA, Philippines – Rivals ABS-CBN Corp. and GMA Network Inc. claimed ratings leadership last month based on separate surveys commissioned by both companies.
ABS-CBN said in a statement that data from Kantar Media showed that the company’s total day share increased to 41 percent compared to GMA’s 31 percent as more Filipinos across urban and rural homes all over the country tuned in to its programs last May.
The company continued to dominate the noontime to early afternoon block from 12 noon to 3 p.m. with an average audience share of 43 percent versus GMA’s 33 percent in May due to the ratings improvement of “It’s Showtime” against perennial leader “Eat Bulaga.”
In the primetime block, ABS-CBN gained an audience share of 46 percent compared to the 30 percent of GMA.
In areas in Luzon outside Mega Manila, ABS-CBN enjoyed a total day audience share of 44 percent compared to GMA’s 33 percent. It also prevailed in the Visayas with 50 percent share versus GMA’s 27 percent as well as in Mindanao with 54 percent against GMA’s 22 percent.
Kantar Media uses a nationwide panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes that represent 100 percent of the total Philippine TV viewing population. It is a leading television (TV) audience measurement provider with capabilities in gathering TV viewing data in both digital and analog platforms.

In a separate statement, GMA said it dominated the ratings in the key areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila last May as shown by data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.
“For the covered period, GMA came ahead of rival networks in these two areas particularly important to the trade across all dayparts including the crucial primetime block,” the company said.
In Urban Luzon, GMA posted an average total day audience share of 34.6 percent, higher than ABS-CBN’s 31.5 percent and TV5’s 13.1 percent.
GMA also maintained its ratings edge in its bailiwick Mega Manila with a 36 percent total day audience share average compared to ABS-CBN’s 29.5 percent and TV5’s 14.1 percent.
It is also worthy to note that GMA News and Public Affairs’ coverage of the midterm elections dubbed Eleksyon 2013 outrated its counterparts in competing networks in NUTAM, Urban Luzon and Mega Manila.
On May 13, Election Day, GMA’s Eleksyon 2013 special coverage between 6 a.m. and 12 midnight scored an average household rating of 11.6 percent in NUTAM while ABS-CBN’s election coverage through Bayan Mo I-Patrol Mo Halalan 2013, TV Patrol 25 and Bandila trailed behind with only 10.6 percent while TV5’s coverage “Pagbabago 2013” and “Aksyon” posted 2.8 percent.
GMA and TV5 subscribe to Nielsen TV Audience Measurement while ABS-CBN is the lone local major TV network that reportedly subscribes to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.
