American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said: “All good men and women must take the responsibility to create legacies that will take the next generation to a level we could only imagine.” This is timely food for thought as we open the New Year because it is, in essence, forward thinking.

AS WE usher in the New Year, some of us have set our new year’s resolutions or certain personal rules that we aim to follow throughout the year. Apparently, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) had a similar idea when it issued a new regulation to be followed by the taxpayers.

QC boy hurt by firecracker dies; revelry-related injuries exceeds 1,000

Christian Jay Comedor, 10 years old, of Baesa in Quezon City, was rushed by her mother, Julie, on New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2013) at the Quezon City General Hospital for injuries caused by the infamous piccolo firecracker. It is a belief in the mostly Catholic nation that making noise to welcome the New Year drives evil spirits away and ushers in good luck. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – A 12-year-old boy who was rendered brain-dead after suffering a head injury from a firecracker explosion has died, but will “live on” after his family decided to donate his organs, the Department of Health said Monday. National Epidemiology Center head Dr. Enrique Tayag also said the number of revelry-related injuries to welcome 2014 breached the 1,000 mark mainly due to piccolo. “12-year-old boy dies but ‘lives’ as [his] family donates his kidneys; [DOH Secretary Enrique] Ona condoles with and praises [his] family for this act of heroism and kindness,” Tayag said on his Twitter account. Tayag also said this year’s revelry-related injuries has passed the 1,000 mark “because many revelers used the illegal, imported piccolo.” As of 6 a.m. of Jan. 5, he said there were at least 1,018 revelry-related injuries, including 997 from setting off or handling consumer fireworks, two from ingesting fireworks, and 19 from stray bullets. Of the 997 fireworks-related injuries, he said 376 or 38 percent were from the piccolo. In the same period in 2012, he said, there were 931 revelry-related injuries, including 904 from fireworks, Read More …

The Philippine National Police on Monday reminded the public to report any of its personnel using firearms to ring in 2014. PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima issued the last-minute reminder on his Twitter account as he inspected firecracker stalls in Bulacan province. “I encourage everybody to report to PNP, those who have the tendency to use their firearms in celebrating New Year’s Eve,” he said. “For your reports, you need not give your identity, just the information regarding the would be law breakers during New Year’s celebration,” he added. Earlier, the PNP had the muzzles of police officers’ firearms taped to make sure the guns are not fired indiscriminately during the holidays. The muzzles will be checked again after New Year’s Day to see if the guns had been fired. Also on Monday, Purisima personally checked on police operations against illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in Bulacan. A separate report by radio dzBB’s Glen Juego also said the Bureau of Fire Protection conducted surprise inspections on fireworks stalls in White Plains in Quezon City. A wish for 2014

Christmas is the celebration of God coming into the world as a man. The man Jesus Christ who is God proclaimed to us the good news – that God is a loving God who loves us. Jesus also taught us how to live: Love God above everything else; Love your neighbor as yourself. And for our sins to be forgiven, He suffered and died for us. For those who believe in Jesus Christ, His message, teachings, sacrifice and His entire life itself – are all manifestations of God’s love. Christ’s promise to us of a place of eternal bliss after our lives in this world of tears – is truly reason for constant celebration and joy. For those who make Jesus Christ the Center of their lives, connect Him to every facet of their existence – how they live and how they die – their lives bear much fruit not only for themselves but also for others. And even if faced with the worst of situations, their faith in God’s love and mercy keeps them from crumbling. It is a part of God’s love that the start of the new year comes exactly a week after we celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ. A new year symbolically and in actuality can mean a new beginning as well as the ending of certain aspects of our lives. Making a list of resolutions for the new year is a good idea. Whether it’s a resolution connected to improving one’s situation – financial, Read More …

Party-list solon still insists on Christmas furlough for Arroyo

The lawmaker who initially asked for a Christmas furlough for former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Thursday said the concessions allowed to her family might not be enough for her to regain her health. “Although not keeping with the Christmas spirit and the Filipino tradition, matatanggap na namin yan. Sabi nga what you cannot equal, you approximate,” said 1-BAP party-list Rep. Silvestre Bello III in a chance interview. The Sandiganbayan, where Arroyo has a pending graft case, allowed her family to spend Christmas and New Year with her in her suite at the Veterans Medical Memorial Center (VMMC) where she is under hospital arrest. Arroyo’s relatives will be allowed to stay until midnight at the hospital on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. “Although it’s for a  very short period, I hope it will do wonders for her very very poor health,” said Bello, a Cabinet official under the Arroyo administration. Bello has asked the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court to Arroyo, currently a Pampanga lawmaker, a Christmas furlough “for humanitarian and compassionate considerations.” Arroyo is under hospital arrest for a plunder case in connection with the alleged misuse of P366-million Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) intelligence funds during her incumbency. Arroyo herself didn’t request for a furlough, but her husband, Mike Arroyo, appealed to President Benigno Aquino III to allow his wife to go home. Bello hypothesized that Aquino did not file for a furlough since she has been repeatedly denied in the past. “Siguro she didn’t ask anymore considering marami siyang motions na not Read More …

The Philippines, a mainly Roman Catholic country in Southeast Asia, prepares for Christmas early – shopping malls start playing Christmas carols in September and lanterns and fireworks are put up in early December. (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) — Government is stepping up efforts to build homes for some 2,800 families affected by super typhoon “Yolanda” before Christmas. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Saturday said the construction of 119 bunkhouse units in devastated areas in Eastern Visayas is being fast-tracked for completion on or before December 22. The bunkhouses will serve as temporary shelter for some 2,856 families displaced by the massive typhoon, which struck central Philippines last November 8. The DPWH said it is hoping that more bunkhouses will be completed in time for New Year. While site development and construction activities in 29 different sites are being hampered by sporadic heavy rains, the DPWH assured that private contractors have committed to work double time during good weather to facilitate the completion of the bunkhouses. Upon completion, the DPWH will turn over the bunkhouses to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for distribution to beneficiaries. (MNS)
