The Philippine government is partnering with Facebook to provide faster internet via the Luzon Bypass Infrastructure (LBI) project, effectively making it a third major player in the telecoms industry. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) signed an agreement with EDGE a.k.a. Facebook to build and operate submarine cable landing stations in Luzon, the first not to be owned by either of the other two major telecoms players in the country. Read Related Story: PH developers, startups offered on Internet.org by Facebook The Luzon project will pave the way to building an ultra high-speed Internet backbone for the entire country by the third quarter of 2019 where Internet speed can go up to 100 Mbps. BCDA will build the LBI made up of two cable landing stations that are connected by a 250-kilometer long cable network corridor, one in Baler Aurora and another in Poro Point, San Fernando, La Union. Facebook will construct and operate a submarine cable system that will land in the cable stations on the east and west coasts of Luzon. This cable link will provide direct access from the Luzon grid to Internet hubs in the United States and Asia. Filipino-British singer Bailey May has been selected to become a member of a international pop group called Now United. Created by Simon Fuller, the mastermind behind American Idol as well as the former manager of the Spice Girls and S Club 7, Now United is a band consisting of 14 artists from 11 different countries. May rose to fame after appearing on the reality programme Pinoy Big Brother in 2015. He went on to star in the romantic comedy series On the Wings of Love and to release his debut album, titled Bailey, recorded under Star Music. But such was not the case with a young lady I met from Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. She is a full-time artist and a budding entrepreneur. A team of Miriam College students placed 9th overall, and 1st in Southeast Asia, in the senior division of the final round of the World Scholars’ Cup Tournament of Champions held at Yale University in November. The All-Filipina team of Mary Katherine DJ San Miguel, Alyssa Santana, and Aleeza Moira Tiongson bested 330 other world teams composed of about 1,000 student finalists aged 11-16 years old. The combined senior and junior division 16-member team brought home 90 medallions and 3 trophies. Fil-Am Gini Santos is lead animator for Disney Pixar movie Coco

The first female supervising animator at Pixar Animation Studios is a Filipino-American. Gini Santos, the studio’s lead animator for the upcoming Disney Pixar movie Coco, is responsible for earning rave reviews about the animation and graphics work shown in the movie’s trailers. The 31-year-old Pixnoy (Pinoys working at Pixar) has been with the studio since 1996 when she began working as a character animator for Toy Story 2. Her film animation credits also include Finding Nemo, Monster’s Inc., The Incredibles, A Bug’s Life, Ratatouille, Up, Lifted and Brave. She was nominated in 2004 for an Annie award for her detailed lifelike animation on Finding Nemo, and was nominated by the Visual Effects Society for an award for this project as well. In a media briefing in the Philippines, Santos talked about how Coco reminded her of Filipino culture. “I was able to relate because I felt that the dynamic of the family was the same that we had here. And you know, the example of like in the States or in the Western world, your personal space is really big. Whereas here in the Philippines, your personal spaces are really tiny. World Bank commends PHL’s model for migrant labor support

The Philippines was commended for its migrant labor support system in a World Bank (WB) report issued in October. The WB report, “Migrating to Opportunity: Overcoming Barriers to Labor Mobility in Southeast Asia,” commended the Philippines as a country that can serve as a good example to the region in helping boost labor mobility because of its migrant labor support. The “highly-developed support system for migrant labor in the Philippines can serve as a model for other countries,” stated the WB report which highlighted ASEAN countries’ contributions in promoting workers’ welfare and deepening of economic integration. In the Philippines, several migrant-focused agencies are housed mostly within the Department of Labor and Employment. Their roles and responsibilities are well defined, with the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency responsible mainly for managing migration and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration responsible mainly for protecting migrants. Winwyn Marquez, was crowned Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 in Sta Cruz, Bolivia, making her the very first Filipina to compete and win in the beauty title. The 25-year-old beat 27 other candidates in the competition, which celebrates the Hispanic heritage and culture. She succeeded Maria Camila Soleibe from Colombia. Hours earlier in Manila, Karen Ibasco was crowned 2017 Miss Earth at Mall of Asia Arena in Manila. It was back to back victories for the Philippines. Medical Physicist Karen Ibasco hailed as Miss Earth 2017

University of Santo Tomas cum laude graduate Karen Ibasco has been crowned 2017 Miss Earth, during the coronation night held at Mall of Asia Arena Saturday night. Ibasco became the fourth Filipina to be crowned as Miss Earth since the pageant began in 2001. She followed the footsteps of Karla Henry (2008), Jamie Herrell (2014) and Angelia Ong (2015). The 26-year-old beauty from Manila outshined 84 other global candidates.
