PCG: 2 coast guards implicated in Taiwan fisherman’s death have lawyered up

The Philippine Coast Guard on Thursday revealed that two PCG members ordered arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman last year have consulted their lawyers. “They have their private lawyers already,” PCG spokesman Lt. Cdr. Armand Balilo told GMA News Online in a text message. The two, Coast Guard Commanding Officer Arnold Dela Cruz and Seaman First Class Mhelvin Bendo, have lawyered up after a Cagayan court ordered their arrest for obstruction of justice in connection with the death of Hung Shih-cheng in disputed waters in May 2013. The warrants were issued by the Municipal Trial Court Branch 11 in Sta. Ana, Cagayan. The judge set the bail at P12,000 each, which can be posted in any trial court in the Philippines, Navera said. However, when asked if the two have posted bail, Balilo said he was not aware of Dela Cruz and Bendo’s current status with the law. “I have no information of their whereabouts,” he said. The charges against the two stemmed from the alleged falsification of Dela Cruz’s unit’s monthly gunnery reports “in order to reflect a smaller amount of ammunition used during the shooting incident,” according to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), which investigated the case. Charged along with the two were SN1 Marvin Ramirez and LTJG Martin Bernabe. Apart from obstruction of justice charges, separate cases of homicide have also been lodged against Dela Cruz, Bendo and six other PCG men. Hung, 65, was killed on May 9, 2013 in the Read More …

AP FILE PHOTO TOKYO – Three Chinese ships entered disputed waters off Tokyo-controlled islands in the East China Sea on Sunday, the Japanese coastguard said, the first such incident since Beijing announced an air defense zone in the area last month. The vessels entered the 12-nautical-mile territorial waters at about 9:00 a.m. (0000 GMT) off one of the Senkaku islands, which China also claims and calls the Diaoyus, the Japan Coast Guard said. They left the area shortly after noon. It was the first time that Chinese coastguard ships had been spotted sailing through the waters since Beijing raised regional tensions with its declaration of an Air Defense Identification Zone in November. Chinese vessels have sailed in and out of contiguous waters around the islands but stayed away from entering territorial waters since November 22, a Japanese coastguard official said. Japan’s conservative Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has vowed no compromise on sovereignty of the islands and stepped up defence spending, believing that China is trying to change the status quo through growing sea incursions. Chinese state-owned ships and aircraft have approached the Senkakus on and off to demonstrate Beijing’s territorial claims, especially after Japan nationalised some of Read More …

Taiwan naval vessel with Yolanda relief supplies reaches Cebu

A Taiwan Navy tank-landing vessel arrived Friday in Cebu with 530 tons of relief supplies and equipment for survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Two Philippine ships guided the “Chung He” to port, after which its supplies were unloaded and handed over to the Philippines, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported. CNA reported the supplies included canned food, rice, water, clothes, tents, generators, excavation machinery and prefabricated houses. It added the items were turned over at a ceremony hosted by Taiwan’s deputy representative to the Philippines Chang Tai-lai. Also on Friday, Taiwan Fertilizer Co. bought 36,000 kilos of domestically grown cabbage that will be exported to the Philippines for charity sale to help Yolanda victims. CNA said the company already donated NT$2.14 million worth of bottled water to the relief efforts. Friday’s shipment came after airlifts of more than 150 tons of goods in past weeks to help Yolanda victims. Taiwan’s government also donated $200,000 to the Philippines in the wake of the typhoon.
