  • “You can’t do it!”
  • “Nothing good is gonna come out of that!”
  • “Why are you so stubborn?”
  • “You are just gonna fail, again!”
  • “You are day-dreaming again!”
  • “That’s impossible!”
  • “We are just gonna go bankrupt.”

Can you somehow relate to these statements?

We often hear these from people who somehow become happy when they are able to put down others with their harsh and painful comments.

These are the kind of people who dump out their frustrations on others, seeking sympathy from those around them by forcing them to experience what they are going through. Why are there people who are negative? Where does all their negativity come from?

  1. PAST EXPERIENCE/S

Maybe they have experienced something in their past that did not turn out well: a bankrupt business, rejection at a job or a failed business venture.

So in effect, they are angry and bitter. And this is how they end up treating the people around

  2. CRAB MENTALITY

There are people who don’t know how to handle failure. So instead of getting back on track and work on ways to improve their life, they attack those who are out there succeeding.

Just take the example I gave earlier. You have a great job or successful business but they don’t, so they end up saying discouraging and de-motivating words to discourage you. Their goal is to see you fail as they did.

  3. PERFECTIONIST

When you do something good, no one notices. But if you do something wrong, people will judge you for it, no matter how small it may be.  What’s more, they will never forget it.

This is how negative people are; they see the mistakes in others instead of the successes. They anticipate it. For them what is wrong is wrong, and there is nothing that can be done to change that. They will go on and on about your mistake until you are down in despair and discouragement.

  4. NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENT

When the people around you are negative, then you will most likely be influenced to that way of thinking as well. Like the saying goes,

“Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are”.

For instance, if you are surrounded by co-workers who constantly criticize the company – from low pay to extended work hours, you may end up absorbing their negativism and would soon also be among those who keep on complaining.

  5. UNGRATEFUL

These are people who are not contented with life. They always want to be happy, to have money all the time or to have the best in life, but if these desires do not get satisfied, they feel bad and involve other people in their misery.

It is okay to dream and have ambitions in life. But in doing so we also need to know how to be grateful of the blessings we have, and not just notice what we lack in life.

THINK. REFLECT. APPLY

Are you a pessimist or an optimist?

Where is your negativity coming from?

How can you prevent it from happening?
