The talented group had recently added another laurel in their caps by winning the Citta D’Arezzo Grand Prize in Italy which earned them the ticket to compete in next year’s much coveted European Grand Prix for Choral Singing (EGP).
Also known as U.P. Philippine Madrigal Singers, the Philippine Madrigal Singers bested 10 other choirs for the grand prize of the 64th Polyphonic International Competition Guido d’Arezzo. The non-professional choirs came from France, Slovenia, Iceland, Italy, Sweden, Bulgaria and the Ukraine.
Fondly called “The Madz”, the Philippine Madrigal Singers also took home the following awards – 1st Prize in Compulsory Program, 1st Prize in Musica Sacra, 1st Prize in Monographic, 2nd Prize in Secular Music and Special Listening Committee Awards in Folk Song, Pop, and Renaissance Performances.
The choir known for its supreme artistry has produced hundreds of alumni choristers since its founding in 1963.
Los Angeles-based JIR Foundation which had successfully sponsored concerts in the past will have its hands full preparing for the Philippine Madrigals December gig as a fundraiser in support of its mission of enabling workers to “reach out to the harvest fields’ in fulfillment of the Great Commission.
Led by Entrepreneur Henry W. Chen, JIR has provided a “giving venue” for its benefactors and friends as a way of participating in a worthwhile cause.

Basil Valdez and Joey Albert at a Religious Community Fundraiser
After all these years the magic is still there. The qualities that made them standout continue to mesmerize their audience.
It didn’t come as a surprise at all that their fans of yesteryears still come to their concerts especially if one is support of religious causes.
Original Pilipino Music icon Basil Valdez and the sultry Joey Albert teamed anew for a concert of the Friends of Alagad ni Maria Involved in Leading the Youth (FAMILY) last August 27 at the La Mirada Theater for the Performing Arts and endeared their fans once more with their exceptional artistic gifts that took them to “memory lane”.
Aside from their great singing voices the musical icons’ ability to establish genuine connections with their audience made their performance at the “Songs of the Heart 2” appeared like an intimate event.
The talented duo rekindled a longing for the beauty of yesteryears with their songs.
Also featured at the fundraising event were Bishop Kevin Vann, Bishop Joseph Brennan and Fr. Mark Jon L. Cruz, AM.
