10 deadliest natural disasters in PHL

Flash Flood caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda in Leyte (MNS Photo) MANILA AFP) – Super Typhoon Haiyan may go down in history as the deadliest natural disaster to hit the calamity-prone Philippines, with authorities estimating at least 10,000 dead on one island alone. Haiyan made landfall in the eastern island of Samar on Friday and then cut through the central islands, causing storm surges, strong winds and heavy rain that flattened buildings, toppled trees and electrical poles and washed away houses and cars. The provincial police chief in Leyte, one of the hardest-hit islands, estimated that 10,000 had died there. In Samar, a disaster management official said 300 had died in one town alone with 2,000 still missing. The death toll from Haiyan is still rising as many areas remain isolated after the storm knocked out power and communications and left many roads and bridges impassable. Such disasters are all too frequent in the Philippines, which is located along a typhoon belt and the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many of Earth’s earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Other typhoons also dominate the current list of the 10 deadliest natural disasters on record in the Philippines, based on government or United Nations figures: 1. A tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake devastates the Moro Gulf on the southern island of Mindanao on August 16, 1976, killing between 5,000 and 8,000 people. 2. Tropical Storm Thelma unleashes flash floods on the central city of Ormoc on Read More …

PHL money supply grows 31% in Sept. – Bangko Sentral

A man arranges his peso bills inside a currency exchange shop Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, in Manila, Philippines. The dollar closed Friday at 42.795 pesos, where the peso rose to a new seven-year high on prospects of further U.S. interest rate cuts and likely increases in remittances from Filipinos overseas. (AP Photo/Pat Roque) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Money streaming within the financial system remained strong in September, driven by a very active bank lending while the impact of adjustments in the central bank special deposit window continued to pump money into the economy, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said Thursday. The latest report reflects new international reporting standards, and the central bank is still updating data prior to December 2002. Despite this multi-year high in money supply expansion, inflation is staying on the tepid side in a highly liquid financial market that is deemed a temporary phenomenon. In a statement, the central bank said domestic liquidity as measured by M3 grew at an annualized 31.0 percent to P6.2 trillion in September. M3 – the broadest measure of money – includes currencies in circulation, bank deposits, and money market funds among other highly liquid assets. The September liquidity figure is the same as the revised 31.0 percent in August, the fastest on record since December 2002, according to a staff of the central bank’s Department of Economic Research. “Money supply growth was driven largely by the sustained expansion in domestic claims, or credits to the domestic economy…. in line with faster growth in Read More …

Toyota to unveil concept fuel-cell car at Tokyo Motor Show

Toyota FCV Concept©Toyota (TOKYO-AFP) – Toyota said Tuesday it plans to unveil its latest fuel-cell concept car at the Tokyo Motor show, with an expected commercial rollout two years away. The four-seater sedan has a range of 500 kilometres (310 miles) — longer than previous versions — and can be recharged in just three minutes through hydrogen gas tanks stored inside the vehicle, the Japanese auto giant said ahead of the exhibition later this month. Toyota, the world’s biggest automaker, said it would launch a commercial version of the mid-sized vehicle around 2015. By that time, there were likely to be “hundreds” of hydrogen refuelling stations in Japan, Europe and the United States, it added. Fuel cell vehicles are considered the holy grail of green cars because they emit nothing but water vapour from the tailpipe and can operate on renewable hydrogen gas. Toyota’s concept vehicle seeks to jump two key hurdles that analysts say have hindered consumer buying of so-called green cars, including electric vehicles — range and re-fuelling infrastructure. Relatively high prices have also dented purchasing of green vehicles. However demand for lower-emission vehicles is forecast to grow, with further technological advances in the field seen as crucial due to toughening emissions standards. Apart from Toyota, which is working on its fuel-cell concept car with Germany’s BMW, others are eyeing a widespread commercial offering. They include a Honda joint venture with General Motors and Nissan’s work with Ford and Daimler. Honda already has a commercial fuel-cell car called Read More …

More Customs collectors resign, retire amid agency revamp – Biazon

Customs Commissioner Raffy Biazon as he inspects the submarine and Ducati motorcycle worth P19 million from Korea by the operatives of the Manila International Container Port (MICP) in Tondo, Manila on Friday, July 26,2013.(MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) — Amid a revamp in the agency infamous for corruption, Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Ruffy Biazon said more Customs collectors have resigned or availed of an early retirement. Biazon confirmed that some collectors have tendered their resignation or opted for an early retirement as a cleanup in the bureau continues after President Benigno Aquino III scored the BOC at his State of the Nation Address last July 22 for failing to address rampant smuggling. Biazon, however, declined to name the collectors resigning or retiring as he has yet to receive copies of their resignation or retirement letters. Meanwhile, a highly-placed source from the BOC said Ninoy Aquino International Airport collector Carlos So, Clark collector Ronnie Silvestre, and Zamboanga collector John Tan have availed of an early retirement. Likewise, Rogel Gatchalian, head of the Port of Manila, has resigned Wednesday, saying he wanted to give Aquino a free hand to reform the bureau. Gatchalian, who is tagged as one of the bureau’s “Three Kings,” is one of 27 Customs collectors whom Biazon ordered transferred to the Customs Policy Research Office (CPRO) under the Department of Finance. Gatchalian said in a telephone interview that copies of his resignation letter were sent to the President, to Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, and to Biazon. “Actually, irrevocable Read More …

(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Lawyer Lorna Kapunan on Wednesday withdrew as lead defense counsel in the serious illegal detention case filed against businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles, citing “differences in opinion.” Secretary of Justice Leila de Lima confirmed Kapunan’s withdrawal but said she did not know why. “It’s a matter between her (Kapunan) and her client,” De Lima said. Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 150 clerk of court Diosfa Valencia said Kapunan had not yet submitted her motion to withdraw as defense counsel of Napoles and her co-accused and brother Reynald Lim in their serious illegal detention case. “Depende na sa kanya kung maghire s’ya ng replacement or contented na s’ya with Attorney Villamor [It depends on her if she decides to hire a replacement or she’s already contented with Attorney Villamor],” Valencia said referring to Napoles. Villamor is the collaborating counsel of Kapunan and has been a long time counsel of the Napoleses. Before the confirmation, speculation was already rife that Kapunan had left the case after her sudden departure with her team of around five lawyers after showing up briefly at Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 150 around 9 a.m. Wednesday, before the scheduled hearing of Napoles’ bail petition on the Read More …

PHL needs $46.8 million for quake victims: UN

BRP Dagupan City(LC-551) of the Philippine Navy has started the loading of relief goods Friday, 25 October 2013 in Sangley Point, Cavite City. Relief goods coming from DSWD are intended for Cebu and Bohol victims of 7.2 magnitude earthquake that recently devastated and displaced thousands of residents in several localities. BRP Dagupan City is set to sail on October 27, 2013 or until the relief goods loading has been completed.(MNS photo) MANILA  (AFP) – The United Nations appealed for $46.8 million in international aid on Friday for the hundreds of thousands now living in tents after a big earthquake in the disaster-prone Philippines. A 7.1-magnitude quake last week flattened homes, schools, clinics and other vital infrastructure killing more than 200 people. But a further 35,000 families need emergency shelter while more than 300,000 residents of Bohol island require assistance for basic needs like water, sanitation, food, and health services for six months, UN resident humanitarian coordinator Luizha Carvalho said. “At this moment, the Philippines is the one (country) that really stands alone with the highest of needs and the highest requirements,” Carvalho told a news conference. She said she hoped donors would still give money despite a series of recent natural and man-made disasters that also required international assistance, such as a destructive typhoon in December last year and guerrilla attacks that destroyed parts of the southern city of Zamboanga last month. “We have a very interesting pattern of several events that are happening almost simultaneously and we still hope Read More …
