Hong Kong is known for its shopping and for being a hip and fun place – yet it’s still surprising just how mant diverse and awesome online shopping choices there are in the city. There’s a funky mix of Hong Kong-based tech startups and fashion labels that are doing interesting things with ecommerce. Many of them not only sell in Hong Kong but have also expanded across the region. Plus, this list will also look into some big-bucks ecommerce companies that are accessible to clothes shoppers in the territory. Let’s start – thanks to guidance and inspiration from StartupsHK and SassyHongKong – with the less well-known ones: This online fashion boutique features a growing array of emerging designers and brands – over 60 of them. About 10 of those are from Hong Kong, but the couture selection is from around the world. Featuring womenswear, menswear, and the now obligatory ‘lookbook’ section, this startup is a great blend of startup ecommerce and upstart fashion designers. The Hong Kong-based site can be changed to Chinese, English, or French, and supports payment with one of nine currencies. Also based in Hong Kong, ZaoZao is described by its founders as Kickstarter meets Fab meets Moda Operandi. The idea is that young designers post projects to ZaoZao and garner support for production through crowdfunding. Once the funding goal is reached, production starts and backers get the fashion items that they supported. The site launched in September 2012. When we talked to co-founder Vicky Wu in Read More …
The Armed Forces of the Philippines has formed a special investigation board that will look into the the case of dismissed Philippine Military Academy cadet Aldrin Jeff Cudia. “Upon the instruction of the President, the [AFP] Chief of Staff has created a special investigation board headed by Major General Crisologo Nayve,” AFP public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala told GMA News Online in a phone interview on Wednesday. The five-member board has been formally formed on Tuesday. Nayve, who is also a PMA alumnus, is currently at the military school in Baguio City to conduct the investigation, Zagala said. The AFP public affairs chief added that Chief of Staff General Emmanuel Bautista has yet to receive Cudia’s written appeal. On Saturday, the day before the graduation of the PMA “Siklab Diwa” Class of 2014, the camp of Cudia met with President Benigno Aquino III to talk about the case. The President asked Cudia to put into writing their appeal so that the military could carry out a separate investigation into the issue. Cudia had been found guilty by the Honor Committee for lying in his explanation why he was two minutes late for a class. The former cadet said in his explanation their professor dismissed him late so he was late for his next class. However, the Honor Committee tagged this as a lie since he was technically made to wait by his professor and not dismissed late. For violatin the PMA Honor Code, Cudia was dismissed from Read More …

Dr. Will Coronado: The use of safe and effective products are keys to better dental habits. MANILA, Philippines -For some people, the sting that comes after every gargle is their sign that a mouthwash is actually working. However, this misconception has been dispelled when Pascual Laboratories (PascualLab) introduced OraCare in 2004. It is the first and only mouthwash product in the country that safely eliminates bad breath-causing bacteria without leaving a burning sensation. While OraCare is sugar-free and alcohol-free, its breakthrough technology lies in its active ingredient stabilized chlorine dioxide (ClO2) which was stabilized for pharmaceutical use by Will Coronado, a doctor of science and a US-based Filipino-American. ClO2 originated as a gas, with strong oxidizing properties that, through lab processing to aqueous solution and when added in mouthwash formulations like OraCare, releases oxygen that breaks down the cell wall of bad bacteria and eliminates odor-causing volatile sulfur compounds — thus, effectively keeping the mouth extremely clean and sanitized. Chlorine dioxide was first discovered in 1811 by Sir Humphrey Davy, a recipient of the Noble Peace prize. “It was unstable, had no shelf life, and was in different forms,” points out Dr. Coronado. In 1975, the process to stabilize the compound took place and the creation of a formulation to oral hygiene products ensued. With further research and group collaborations, Dr. Coronado, et al. created another process to stabilize ClO2 — this time for pharmaceutical use. Stabilized ClO2 was then proven safe and effective as a mouthrinse. It neutralizes odor-causing Read More …

Two lawmakers are pushing random, instead of mandatory drug tests, for public officials, high school and college students, and applicants for firearms and driver’s licenses. Reps. Rufus Rodriguez and Maximo Rodriguez Jr. have filed a bill seeking to amend Section 36 of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 requiring mandatory drug testing. Under the proposal, random drug tests will also be done on officers and employees of public and private offices, whether domestic or overseas, officers and members of the military, police and other law-enforcement agencies. Also included in the tests are people charged for criminal offenses punishable with imprisonment of six years, and candidates for public office whether appointed or elected. Based on the latest data from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), less than 1 percent of the 14 million people who underwent mandatory drug testing in various accredited laboratories in the country tested positive for drugs. “The finding, however, does not mean that trafficking and use of dangerous drugs have been successfully abated,” the lawmakers said. They said the bill aims to achieve a balance in the national drug control program so that people with legitimate medical needs are not prevented from being treated with adequate amounts of appropriate medications, which include the use of regulated drugs. Last February, the proposal to impose severe punishments, including the death penalty, on foreign nationals convicted of smuggling illegal drugs to the Philippines was approved by the House committee on dangerous drugs (House Bill 1213) Read More …

In the savage aftermath of the Philippines’ deadliest storm, an exhausted young woman gave birth to a girl on a filthy floor with little more than determination to sustain them. Emily Sagalis survived the tsunami-like ocean surges of Super Typhoon Haiyan by gripping a fence with one hand, while using the other to protect her swollen belly from chunks of metal and other fast-floating debris. Three days later the 21-year-old was lying on a concrete floor in labour amid broken glass, splintered wood and other wreckage of a destroyed airport building that had been turned into a makeshift medical centre. A military doctor told an AFP journalist who witnessed the birth — the first at the centre since the typhoon — that Emily’s life was in danger as there were no antibiotics to treat seemingly inevitable infections. But with the medics overwhelmed by a torrent of critically injured survivors, Emily was forced to leave with Bea Joy just seven hours after giving birth. Haiyan, one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded, claimed about 8,000 lives in November last year, with many people dying in the terrifying days that followed when medicines, food and water were scarce. Emily and Bea Joy, however, defeated death, and today the first-time mother is striving with powerful maternal instincts to create lives of security and happiness on top of the weakest foundations. “I am happy that Bea Joy is happy and healthy. That’s the most important thing,” Emily told AFP on a recent visit Read More …
