Instagram inspires fashion journalist to become an entrepreneur

BLUE Carreon: “No one is going to look after the business except you.” Photo by Nelson Matawaran It only took a distinct perspective, a flair for style, well-composed vignettes and engagement with his Instagram followers that got fashion journalist Blue Carreon into retail. When he opened his 35-sqm store, Blue Carreon Home at Century City Mall, friends from the local media made a beeline for interviews and pictorials. “I was going to pitch to Forbes.com how Instagram got me to open my own store,” says Carreon, a fashion columnist for the South China Morning, Forbes.com and Huffington Post. The store is a collection of functional and decorative objects for the home. He designed the furniture and put them under his brand name Blue Carreon Home, while the accessories are sourced from India, China and America. His vision is to share his sensibilities through his designs. “My aesthetic is classic with a twist,” Carreon says. He points to a square mirror, framed with black metal that is an abstraction of the solihiya, the traditional cross-weaving pattern found in local furniture. New word of mouth When Carreon was renovating his apartments in Makati, Midlevels Hong Kong and Midtown Manhattan, he met various suppliers, manufacturers and visited trade shows. He would post the way he styled his three apartments. Followers on his personal Instagram account (@bluecarreon) would always comment or ask where he sourced his décor. Philippine vessel evades China 'blockade' of disputed reef

2014 (AFP) – Philippine soldiers aboard a fishing vessel engaged Saturday in a dramatic stand-off with Chinese coastguard ships near a remote South China Sea reef claimed by both countries, an AFP journalist witnessed. The Philippine ship finally slipped past the Chinese blockade to reach Second Thomas Shoal, where a handful of Filipino marines are stationed on a Navy vessel that has been grounded there since 1999 to assert their nation’s sovereignty. The Philippine military said the ship, a fishing vessel with soldiers on board, had completed its mission to deliver fresh supplies to the navy ship and rotate the troops. “They were able to pass through the Chinese coastguard vessel and the mission is a success,” Cherryl Tindog, a spokeswoman for the military’s western command, told AFP. “We have successfully re-supplied and rotated the troops.” An AFP reporter and photographer were on a Philippine military plane that circled above the area during the stand-off, which they said lasted for about two hours. Four Chinese vessels had encircled Second Thomas Shoal as the Philippine vessel approached, according to the AFP reporter. Two of the vessels, with “Chinese coastguard” written on the side of the boats, then chased the Philippine boat and tried to block it from reaching the shoal. The vessels appeared to get within a few hundred metres of each other. China claims most of the South China Sea, even waters and islets approaching its neighbours. Second Thomas Shoal is part of the Spratlys, a chain of islets and Read More …

After Haiyan, Philippines expands crop insurance

CALAMBA, Philippines (AP) — The aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines has added urgency to finding a solution to a longstanding problem: less than 10 percent of farmers have crop insurance, and while its advantages are widely understood, few can afford it. Raymundo dela Vina, an 81-year-old farmer in Laguna province near Manila, likened raising crops to betting in a lottery: you go against so many odds including pests and an average of 20 typhoons that pummel the country each year, flooding small rice paddies like his.    The country’s 10.8 million farmers are the second poorest industry after fishermen. Many are tenant tillers who share their harvest with land owners and go into debt to pay for seeds, fertilizer and pest control. Crop insurance is the least of priorities when there is often not even enough money for food. But the government wants to change that. Officials and international aid groups are discussing ways to boost resilience to disasters after Haiyan, one of the strongest typhoons on record, killed more than 6,200 people and flattened towns in the central Philippines on Nov. 8. Better protections are vital for the poor who often end up deeper in poverty with every calamity. A World Bank report estimated that natural calamities cut 0.8 percentage point from the country’s economic growth rate each year on average. The proportion of people living in poverty in 2013 may have risen to 26.4 percent from 25.2 percent the previous year despite economic growth of more Read More …
