Everyone’s Charlie; French envoy grateful

Ambassador Gilles Garachon. AFP FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines–French Ambassador to the Philippines Gilles Garachon on Wednesday thanked the Philippines and the international community for standing with France following last week’s terrorist attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris that left 12 dead. In a tribute to the French victims held by the French embassy in Manila on Wednesday night, Garachon said that “everyone was Charlie,” and “children of the cartoonists” of the magazine, in reference to the French magazine which was attacked by Islamic gunmen in retaliation for its publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed. To our feet Garachon said the Jan. 7 attack on the magazine has taught everyone the importance of freedom of speech and freedom, and that the magazine was attacked because those behind it wanted “silence to prevail.” “Those people wanted to bring us to our knees, but they brought us to our feet. The best answer is to stand all together for our values—the values of our democracy, freedom and freedom of speech,” Garachon said at the gathering held at Alliance Francaise office in Makati. “We are grateful to the international community and to all our friends who stand with us for our common values. It has been very warming for us to see this. We should not remain silent,” he said. Extra-careful The French ambassador told reporters that the French police were mobilized to provide maximum protection for French journalists and that they were all doing their best “to protect them.” Read More …

Turning around major brands, businesses

Bienvenido Bautista MARKETING guru Bienvenido Bautista was president and managing director of such large food and beverage companies as San Miguel Brewery, Kraft, Universal Robina Corp. Here, he shares his thoughts on turning around brands and businesses. Question: As former president of Philippine International Trading Corp. (PITC)—Pharma, I understand you were able to turn around this profit-challenged government company within your 14-month stay. What issues plagued PITC and how did you turn around PITC? Answer: PITC Pharma or PPI is the only government owned pharmaceutical company, which formerly owned Botika ng Bayan (BNB). It spearheaded the drive to promote and encourage the use of generic pharmaceutical products at low prices. Unfortunately, with the entry of more pharmacies that focused primarily on generics, like Generics Pharmacy, Generika, even Watsons, with their advertising budgets (PPI had none), consumers went to these competitors instead. Additionally, PPI was logistically challenged—cash flow was an issue. Suppliers weren’t being paid, thus stocks in BNBs were depleted, causing customer dissatisfaction. The objective of offering low priced generics through low-end botikas was good, but given the pressures of competition and poor fiscal management, BNB died a natural death in 2013. But PPI had an ace which it could use—as a procurement arm for any government agency that needed to buy medicines. Thus, when an agency like the DOH (Department of Health) needs to procure medicines for their projects, they have two options: Buy it themselves or buy the medicines through PPI. In reality, PPI took the hassles of Read More …

International concern for Pope Francis security

A local newspaper has reported that intelligence agents have been sent by the CIA to assess the security situation for the Manila visit of Pope Francis who is arriving at Villamor Air Base at 5:45 this afternoon. According to sources, other international intel organizations have been sharing information to identify security concerns and assess the threat level, among them Israel’s Mossad that reportedly issued a warning about possible attacks to the Vatican by the terrorist group ISIS/ISIL. Additional reports also identified the Pope as a specific target by Islamic terrorists following the pontiff’s condemnation of the shootings in Paris that resulted in the killing of journalists working for the weekly satire Charlie Hebdo. Much earlier, local papers also carried news reports that ISIS operatives have been recruiting in Mindanao, and that a hundred young Filipinos have gone to Syria and Iraq to fight for ISIS. And let’s not forget, no less than an Iraqi official had raised the possibility of an ISIS threat following the Pope’s strong condemnation of the terrorist group last year. The Vatican has denied receiving such reports or warnings from Mossad, CIA and other organizations, but we wouldn’t be surprised at the existence of such warnings considering the heightened alert across France and Italy in the aftermath of the Paris shootings. The Philippine government, however, has admitted that local authorities have been coordinating with the Interpol and Asean to identify individuals who have joined the ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Muslims in Philippines march against Charlie Hebdo

Around 1,500 people protested in one of the Philippines’ main Muslim-majority cities on Wednesday against the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo’s caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, police said. Local politicians, teenaged students and women with veils covering their faces packed the main square in Marawi in the southern Philippines, some raising their fists in the air as a Charlie Hebdo poster was burnt. “What had happened in France, the Charlie Hebdo killing, is a moral lesson for the world to respect any kind of religion, especially the religion of Islam,” organisers said in a statement released during the three-hour rally. “Freedom of expression does not extend to insulting the noble and the greatest prophet of Allah.” A group calling itself “Boses ng Masa”, or Voice of the Masses organised the rally, which attracted about 1,500 people, Marawi police officer Esmail Biso told AFP. He said non-government organisations and a local school owner were behind the group. Twelve people including eight Charlie Hebdo cartoonists and journalists and two police officers were killed last week after Islamist militants struck the magazine’s Paris office, in an attack that has sparked outrage worldwide. The attacks triggered giant rallies in support of Charlie Hebdo’s victims and the right to publish images of Mohammed, which is deemed blasphemous for Muslims. The protest in the Philippines was one of first reported worldwide since the violence to express outrage at Charlie Hebdo. The protesters carried streamers in with the words “You are Charlie” written in French, in response Read More …

Businesses to keep momentum in Year of Wooden Sheep

THE year 2015 or the year of the Wooden Sheep will have businesses keep their momentum of businesses, according to Feng Shui enthusiast Edgar Hao. “The year of the Sheep will be better than last year. This is a year good for business and opportunities,” Hao said in an interview on Tuesday. The year of the Wooden Sheep which will officially kick in on Feb. 19, has the sense of balance as all the five elements including wood, water, metal, fire and earth will be found in this year’s Feng Shui chart, which serves as their guide in making predictions. “There is momentum. The balanced astronomical signs signify a year of prosperity and a year of opportunities. The presence of fire element, for instance, will continue to push opportunities especially in business,” said Hao, who has been practicing practical Feng Shui for 15 years. 2 elements The year of the sheep is symbolized by two elements— with yin wood sitting on top of earth. Although this signals disharmony as the “wood conquers earth on the destructive cycle,” such conflicts, according to Hao, may be more easily resolved with compromise and concessions in 2015 as the nature of the yin wood is a flower which is easy to adjust directions and is much more flexible. “Yin wood symbolizes the small branches of tree which is not stubborn and can easily adjust to changing circumstances. With such character, expect 2015 will be comparatively less violent than 2014,” said Hao. “In 2015, the Read More …

No SC action means LRT, MRT fare hikes enforced

President Benigno S. Aquino III meets with his Cabinet Secretaries at the President’s Hall of Malacanang Monday (October 13) concerning the status of the MRT 3 maintenance. The President is concerned about negative reports he has been receiving regarding Metro Rail operations. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The controversial fare increases ordered by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC)for the Light Rail Transit and Metro Rail Transit will have to remain in place for now. The high tribunal, sitting in its first full court session for the year, did not issue a temporary restraining order being requested by several groups against DOTC Order 2014-014, which increased last January 4 the base fare of P11 for both the MRT and the LRT and an additional P1.00 charged per kilometer. There are currently four petitions against the fare hike, namely the ones filed by former Iloilo Rep. Augusto Syjuco; a group led by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, joined by 17 individuals; the United Filipino Consumers and Commuters Inc. (UFCC); and a group led by party-list Bayan Muna. In their respective pleas, the petitioners said the DOTC committed grave abuse of discretion in issuing Order 2014-014 because it has no jurisdiction to decide on applications for transportation fare increase and issue implementing orders. The order was issued in violation of the right of the public to notice and hearing, they argued. Named respondents were DOTC Secretary Emilio Abaya, MRT-3 officer-in-charge Renato San Jose, LRT administrator Honorito Chaneco, MRT Corp., and Light Rail Read More …
