Vice President Jejomar Binay on Friday lamented being the “flavor of the months” as he appealed to the media to give equal treatment even to those accused of corruption. A guest speaker during the National Convention of Government Employees, Binay, now in the center of corruption allegations, said his standard reply to anyone asking how he is doing has been, “Ito, flavor of the months.” Binay, a strong candidate for president in 2016 based on surveys, is being linked to corruption activities starting from his stint as Makati mayor. He is also accused of having hidden wealth, allegedly evidenced by his sprawling property in Batangas province and a log cabin in Tagaytay City. During Friday’s event, Binay reminded Esperanza Ocampo, president of Philippine Government Employees Association, who mistakenly introduced him as “Mahal na Presidente,” to be careful. “Nagkakandabulol-bulol ka sa pagsasalita, alam mo naman kung gaano kalupit ang panahon ngayon,” he said, resorting to metaphor. Ocampo immediately corrected herself, saying it was an honest mistake. Appeal to media In his speech, Binay appealed to the media to give government employees accused of corruption a fair treatment. “Alam mo naman kapag napagbintangan ka, ang mga tao naniniwala agad. Apela ko lang sa media na sana bigyan nyo ng palugit na parehong espasyo para makapagpaliwanag ang mga inaakusahan,” he said. Binay has denied the accusations against him, but has refused to attend hearings by the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee looking into the anomalies linked to him. He has also backed down from Read More …

Taylor Swift has accused Spotify of harming the music industry, but she returned to number one Wednesday as the benchmark US album chart for the first time factored in streaming. Swift’s “1989” — which last month had the biggest debut of any US album in 12 years — returned to the top spot on the Billboard 200 for the seven days through Sunday after slipping for one week. As part of the chart’s biggest revamp since 1991, tracking company Nielsen SoundScan is including streaming in its measurements amid the rapid growth of services such as Spotify which allow music fans to listen to unlimited music on demand. Swift benefited from another change as part of the Billboard 200’s revamp — digital downloads of songs, with 10 purchases equivalent to one album sale. She sold 339,000 “album equivalent units” in the week, with 83 percent of the sales still traditional album sales either in physical or digital format. “1989” also gained ground due to the lack of a new blockbuster debut. British boy band One Direction’s “Four,” which dethroned Swift when it came out, slipped in its second week to, incidentally, number four. New release “Shady XV,” a compilation double-album by Eminem and affiliated rappers, entered at number three. Number two was a Christmas album by the Texas a cappella group Pentatonix. The clearest beneficiary of the chart’s changes was teenage star turned pop singer Ariana Grande, whose “My Everything” shot up from number 39 to number seven, with one-third of Read More …
Rizal Park Management personnel install colorful native lanterns, or parols, at the park on Wednesday. Less than a month before Christmas, establishments are busy beautifying and adding Christmas decorations for the Yuletide season. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senate President Franklin Drilon said on Tuesday that Congressional leaders have agreed to tackle and pass a host of key measures before the Christmas break, including laws to purge unfair business practices, and to increase the take-home pay of workers in the private and public sectors. “After our monthly meeting, we reached a consensus with the House of Representatives to enact at least eight or nine proposed measures before Congress takes a break on December 17,” said Drilon. “We resolved to finish the priority measures, in recognition of their immense benefits to the public and the urgency needed to properly effect such legislation,” he added. “For instance, we are bound to enact the bill that will raise the tax exemption ceiling of the 13th-month pay and other benefits from P30,000 to P82,000, so that the President will be able to sign it before the year ends,” said Drilon, noting that the House agreed to adopt the Senate’s version of the bill. In the House version, the limit was pegged at P75,000. Drilon said Congress will pass the Fair Competition Act “in order to promote economic efficiency in trade, industry and commerce through the prohibition of anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant position, and anti-competitive mergers that distort and restrict competition.” “Having a competition Read More …
“Upon receipt, [the] DILG secretary must immediately implement,” he added. At present, Purisima is also facing two plunder complaints before the Office of the Ombudsman over his alleged hidden wealth. He is currently under fire for his sprawling resthouse in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija, and the allegedly questionable renovation of the PNP chief’s official quarters inside Camp Crame. Aside from Purisima, also suspended for six months without pay pending administrative investigation are: Police Director Gil Meneses, former chief of the Civil Security Group; and former officials of the PNP Firearms Explosive Office: P/C Supt. Raul Petrasanta, P/C Supt. Napoleon Estilles, P/SSupt. Allan Pareno, P/SSupt. Eduardo Acierto, P/SSupt. Melchor Reyes, P/SSupt. Lenbell Fabia, P/Supt. Sonia Calixto, P/CInps. Nelson Bautista, P/SInsp. Ford Tuazon, and P/CInsp. Ricardo Zapata. AK-47 Aside from this, Rafanan said Petrasanta and others will also face preventive suspension of six months in connection with the ongoing probe on the missing AK-47 firearms. He noted that the order may simultaneously be implemented with the first preventive suspension in connection with the alleged anomalous courier service contract. He added that only Meneses, Rentoy, and Estilles are not included in the second order “because the Ombudsman noted that they are already retired.” — RSJ/KG, GMA News

Cavite-Laguna Expressway Route Map www.dpwh.gov.ph The government is implementing a “shorter” single-stage bidding process for the re-auction of the 45-kilometer Cavite Laguna Expressway (Calax) public private partnership (PPP) deal, according to Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson. Singson said Wednesday that those guidelines, along with a P20.1-billion “floor price,” would be part of the new terms, which will likely be published within the month. The bid submission, as previously reported, was still slated for May 2015, he said. A single-stage process means qualification, technical and financial bids will be submitted and evaluated at the same time versus a two-stage process, when these are separately submitted. The Department of Public Works and Highways is waiting for the “final and executory decision from the Office of the President on the President’s directive to rebid Calax.” This would signal the start of the rebid process, Singson said. The P20.1-billion floor price matches the offer of a unit of San Miguel Corp., which was disqualified by the DPWH bids and awards committee last June because of a technical error. That decision was appealed by SMC and the disqualification, in an order by President Aquino last Nov. 19, was reversed. Apart from the SMC subsidiary, the three other original bidders were the tandem between Ayala Corp. and Aboitiz Land Inc., which was the original frontrunner although its bid was P8.4-billion short of SMC’s offer, a unit of Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Investments Corp. and Malaysia’s AlloyMTD Group. Malacañang ordered a rebid because of Read More …

The steak-lover’s steak: Outback Steakhouse’s rib eye steak is well-marbled, juicy and savory. While some entrepreneurs need to hunt for the right business idea that would set them on the path to success, there are those who luckily get theirs just by watching TV. “Crocodile Dundee to be exact,” says Outback Steakhouse Southeast Asia chairman Prasoon Mukherjee with an impish grin over lunch at the newly opened Outback Steakhouse in BluebayWalk, Pasay City. Prasoon is referring to Chris Sullivan, one of the founders of the largest steakhouse chain in the world, who at 48 took an early retirement to start his own restaurant named after the vast remote Australian outback. Contrary to popular belief, Outback Steakhouse is actually a popular American brand that originated in Florida where Sullivan comes from. An avid fan of Crocodile Dundee, Sullivan was inspired to put up a restaurant similar to the local pub owned by Dundee’s business partner Walter “Wally” Reilly. And so, he immediately called his friend, chef Tim Gannon — who was working somewhere else — and asked him to fly over to Florida to conceptualize the menu and get things started. “Unfortunately, Tim didn’t have enough money to buy a plane ticket. An ardent polo player, he sold his saddle for US$200 and booked a flight to Florida the next day. Tim and Chris are good friends. They trusted each other. I guess that’s the secret to the brand’s success. It’s built on trust and hard work,” adds Prasoon, who bought Read More …
People line up to get a ride on the Pampanga Eye, the country’s tallest Ferris Wheel, at the Sky Ranch in SM City Pampanga during its ceremonial opening on Wednesday. Retail giant SM inaugurated the park on Wednesday and will be open to the public starting November 30. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Lawmakers have filed a measure calling for a congressional inquiry into the alleged failure of the government to allocate a big part of the revenue collection from Republic Act 10351 or the Sin Tax Law to finance its universal health care program. “After its enactment two years ago, many Filipinos are still not covered by the universal health care program of the government and many cities and provinces are still without public clinics and hospitals,” Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez (2nd district, Cagayan de Oro City) said. In House Resolution 1591, Rodriguez asked the concerned House committee to conduct an inquiry into the matter and invite the officials of the Department of Finance (DOF), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to shed light on the issue. According to Rodriguez, the law, which was enacted in December 18, 2012, was expected to produce additional revenue amounting to P34 billion. “The law was enacted to cover millions of Filipinos in the government universal health care program and the promise that the government will construct public clinics and hospital throughout the country,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez said the revenues to be collected from the sin tax Read More …
