The Philippines won two awards at the 2017 Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA), one for renowned Filipino filmmaker Brillante Mendoza who bagged another the Best Director award for his film “Ma’ Rosa,” and a Best Film award for Philippines-Malaysia collaboration film “Singing in Graveyards” which stars Filipino rock legend Joey “Pepe” Smith. Brillante Mendoza Mendoza received his second international best director award for his 2016 film The independent filmmaker earlier received the same recognition during the Gijon International Film Festival in Spain. “Ma’ Rosa” tells the story of a well-liked sari-sari store owner Rosa (Jaclyn Jose) who sells drugs as a side business to meet her family’s daily needs while raising bail for her jailed husband Nestor (Julio Diaz). The same film won for actress Jose the first Best Actress win for the Philippines at the Cannes Film Festival in France. “Singing in Graveyards” was hailed as Best Film at the MGGA. The film stars Filipino rock legend Joey “Pepe” Smith who plays a rock star impersonator who’s given a chance to open for the rock legend’s concert. The Philippines Men’s National Ice Hockey Team has brought home the bronze medal from the 2017 Asian Winter Games held in Japan. Philippines Men’s National Ice Hockey Team [via Facebook] The newly-formed national team made its entry in the international scene by winning a medal on their first tournament – making the Philippines the only tropical country to win a medal in the event. PH Ice Hockey Team coach Daniel Brodan shared how the national team made it to the finals of the tournament. “This has been great. We started six months ago with 10-20 players. We would get together and practise and try to teach them some techniques,” Brodan was quoted in an article on the International Ice Hockey Federation site. “I'm happy to see that after three games we can play for the medal. I am very proud of this team.” The men’s squad knocked China off third place (9-2) and claimed the Division II Bronze Medal victory at the close of the event. Philippine team captain Swiss-Filipino Steven Fuglister who grew up in Zurich and began playing when he was eight spoke on behalf of the players. “It's a huge honour for us to represent the country here. Carlos Hinolan Former radio disc jockey Carlos Hinolan has built a successful startup company with just Php500. Hinolan pioneered sensory branding in the Philippines with AudioWav Media, a tech company founded in 2003 that provides WAV proprietary devices to allow businesses to give the best customer service. Multi-sensory branding customizes audio, visuals and scents for food and convenience stores allowing them to give customers personalized experiences. AudioWav provides audio players, LED screens, and scent diffusers. The AudioWav chief talked to the Inquirer about how he wanted to have his own radio station when he was younger and ending up getting his big break by customizing the sound of a popular fast food chain. Hinolan bought a microphone with the Php500 to create a customized voice content. "You could say I was lucky that we created relevant content for those 238 stores. And they used that content to tell their customers what's for breakfast, what's for lunch, what's for merienda and what they can take home to their families," the AudioWav CEO said about his work for Chowking. Chinkee Tan Has this ever happened to you? You were planning to do something, but your plan didn’t happen. That’s exactly what happened to me today. I woke up at 2AM to catch a 4:30AM flight going to Cebu via Cebu Pacific Terminal 3. We arrived around 2:30AM at the airport. We reached the ticketing, presented our identification and plane tickets, but we were informed that our ticket was for PAL and is on Terminal 2. To avoid being late, we took the cab and weight straight to Terminal 2. When we arrived there, we were informed that we only have tickets for Cebu to Manila, but we don’t have Manila to Cebu. When we called our organiser, only then did we realize that they sent two different emails — one email had the Cebu Pacific ticket, and the other e-mail had the PAL ticket. What I was able to print was the PAL ticket, and not the Cebu Pacific ticket. The situation cost me an extra P8,500 to buy another ticket. What are the lessons that I learned? LESSON 1. NEVER ASSUME I travel a lot. Because of this, I didn’t even bother to check well which airline I was going to ride. Eight women cadets have been recognized as topnotchers in the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) graduating class of 2017. The top cadets of the Philippine Military Academy class of 2017 [by Mau Victa via Rappler] Rovi Mariel Valino Martinez led the topnotchers, graduating as Valedictorian of the Salaknib PMA class of 2017. Martinez will go to the U.S. Naval War College in Rhode Island as part of her award as the top Navy graduate. Seven other female cadets join Martinez in the top 10, reportedly a record for the PMA since females started to be accepted in the military school in 1993. The women dominated the recognitions for the 167 “mistahs” of the class of 2017. Female graduates of the batch numbered 63, another record number in PMA history.
