Dacia upgrades its Duster SUV without raising the price

The new and improved Dacia Duster will have the same price tag as the previous model.©Raphaël Hetier / Dacia (Relaxnews) – The new and improved Duster was squarely in the spotlight at Dacia’s stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show, presenting a redesigned, more dynamic body. At a time when a number of car makers are “urbanizing” their SUVs, the Duster still stands out as a tough and rugged off-road adventurer. Dacia, the Romanian car manufacturer owned by Renault, has presented a new, better-equipped version of its Duster, which it will most likely sell at the same price as the previous model. The SUV now includes cruise control, assisted rear parking and a path control system, in addition to a fresh new design that matches the brand’s other 2014 models. Along with its style upgrade, the Duster has also become more efficient. Dacia reports that the model’s new TCe 125 fuel engine has an average fuel consumption of just 6L/100km, and a new shift-up indicator alerts drivers through a visual signal when shifting into the next gear will increase efficiency. For the protection of passengers and drivers, the Duster is now equipped with front airbags and head-thorax side airbags, as well as visual and audio alerts when the driver or passengers have failed to buckle their seatbelts. The back seat includes ISOFIX car seat attachments to ensure maximal safety for child passengers. Dacia is reportedly going to market the new Duster at the same price as its predecessor, which is currently Read More …

NURSES BACK IN DEMAND IN CANADA…BUT ONLY IN QUEBEC

By Atty. Henry Moyal Atty. Henry Moyal and Lani Misalucha (photo courtesy of www.moyal.com) When the Federal Immigration Minister announced the list of “occupations in demand” in Canada last May 2013, it took many by surprise. The announcement that narrowed the list to only 24 occupations was not the surprise but the occupations themselves. A quick perusal of the list illustrates that engineers make up for most of the occupations and that doctors and nurses were off the list. Applicants who seemingly qualified as nurses for the past decade were now shut out of the competition and had to find other ways to enter Canada (for example via a spouse’s occupation or as a live in caregiver). However, the Quebec government has just announced that effective immediately 20,000 selection certificates will be issued for occupations in demand in their province and nurses are in high demand. The Canadian Nurses Associations predicts that 60,000 nurses will be needed by 2022 in order to fill labor shortages. As such, it may be possible for nurses who qualified previously under the Federal Immigration stream to now qualify under the newly revamped Quebec program. It should be noted that Quebec is a French speaking province and a high allocation of points are awarded for those who are proficient in French but it may be possible to qualify without much French knowledge as nurses have now been awarded 16 points for training (the maximum amount). Some of the other requirements to qualify are: Must complete Read More …

PHL only emerging Asian nation with strong momentum: OECD

Workers of National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) rush the beautification of all Manila City parks including Luneta Park on Monday (Sept. 9, 2013) (MNS photo) PARIS, September 9, 2013 (AFP) – Growth is picking up pace in most major rich nations but momentum is slowing or stable in emerging economies, the OECD said on Monday. Economic growth is accelerating in the United States, Britain and the eurozone, while it is above trend in Japan, according to the OECD’s index of composite leading indicators. The index is considered to be a reliable guide to future economic activity. The index suggested Italy and France are switching to growth. But the OECD, grouping 34 advanced countries, said growth was below trend in Brazil and India. Meanwhile it was returning to trend in China and was around trend level in Russia. In a separate report, the OECD said the Philippines was the only emerging Asian nation with strong business cycle momentum, although China and Singapore have stabilized. The OECD said “the key imminent downside risk facing Southeast Asia, China and India is the turmoil in the financial market, triggered by the prospects of tapering of quantitative easing (QE) policy in the US.” The US stimulus program led to a flood of funds into emerging markets seeking higher returns, but the impending shift in monetary policy has seen a sharp withdrawal, causing currencies and equities in some emerging markets to slump.

China is behaving like Janet Lim-Napoles

Global Networking By Rodel Rodis 7:03 pm | Wednesday, September 11th, 2013 In two world stage events occurring simultaneously last week, China presented two starkly different faces: a big power statesman in one, and a petty barnyard bully in the other. The two faces were similar to the ones displayed by accused Pork Barrel Fixer Janet Lim-Napoles: in one acting like a regal socialite hobnobbing with Sen. Jinggoy Estrada and Sen. Bong Revilla, and in the other, behaving like a common thug when confronting subordinates like Benhur Luy who alleged that she kidnapped him last December 19, 2012 after learning of his intention to compete with her in the lucrative Pork Barrel scam business. The only difference between Napoles and China is the magnitude of their stages. For China, one world stage was the Summit of the Group of 20 (G20) top economic leaders of the world meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia on September 4-5 where China’s Pres. Xi Jinping presented his nation’s views on “ways to achieve a steady global recovery and a strong, sustainable and balanced growth”. At this Summit, Xi supported the efforts by the Summit’s host, Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin, to dissuade the US from bombing Syria. Xi warned that US military intervention in Syria would damage the world economy and jack up oil prices. Earlier, at his California Summit with Pres. Obama on June 7, 2013, Xi called on the US and China to “work together to build a new type of relations between major Read More …

The meanings of September 11 (or a tale of two dictators)

Kuwento By Benjamin PimentelINQUIRER.net 3:01 pm | Wednesday, September 11th, 2013 Most Americans know it as the day when extremists killed more than two thousand innocent civilians in New York and Washington DC. This week in Manila, it’s associated with a controversial rally claiming to be against government corruption. But for many Filipinos and Chileans, September 11 is memorable for other reasons. It’s Ferdinand Marcos’s birthday and the dictator never got tired of making us remember it when he was in power. (I still remember the fascist song we also had to sing during those years.) In Chile, it was the day in 1973 when a military coup backed by the United States overthrew the democratically-elected government of Salvador Allende, launching one of the most brutal regimes in Latin American history. Last year, we marked the 40th anniversary of the martial law declaration that launched the Marcos dictatorship. This year, it’s the Chileans’ turn. They’re marking the 40th anniversary of the bloodbath that ushered in an era of terror. Here’s another way to see it: Marcos was celebrating his birthday and the first year of his reign of greed and terror when the Chileans were plunged into their own ugly nightmare. One date, two dictatorships. In both Chile and the Philippines, it was a time of suffering. People opposed to the regimes were imprisoned, tortured or made to disappear. The cronies of the dictators grew rich and powerful. People lived in fear, even hopelessness. But it was also a time Read More …

After 2 consecutive years of improvement: Overall New-Vehicle Sales: Satisfaction in Phl declines

MANILA, Philippines – Despite strong first half improvements in new-vehicle sales in the Philippines, overall satisfaction with the new-vehicle purchase experience has declined in 2013, according to a J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2013 Philippines Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study released recently.   Now in its 13th year, the study examines seven factors that contribute to overall customer satisfaction with the purchase experience. In order of importance, they are delivery process; delivery timing; salesperson; paperwork; deal; sales initiation; and dealer facility. SSI performance is reported as an index score based on a 1,000-point scale, with a higher score indicating higher customer satisfaction.  Overall sales satisfaction averages 846 in 2013, down nine points from 2012. The decline in satisfaction is driven by lower scores across all factors, most notably in salesperson. “Managing the expectations of new-vehicle buyers is a crucial aspect of the salesperson’s responsibility at dealerships, and this is where the communication and following through on commitments hold the greatest value in sales satisfaction,” said Mohit Arora, executive director at J.D. Power Asia Pacific, Singapore. “Fewer customers in 2013 have been informed about the delivery timing of their vehicle, which impacts the proportion of customers who are delighted with their salesperson’s level of commitment.” The study finds that 76 percent of new-vehicle buyers finance their new-vehicle purchase through a loan, an increase of 5 percent from 2012. However, a salesperson’s initiative in offering a loan to buyers has significantly declined, as the proportion of new-vehicle buyers who are offered a loan declines Read More …

DTI mulls price freeze over Zamboanga City

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Trade of Industry (DTI) is studying the possibility of imposing a price freeze in Zamboanga City amid the ongoing standoff between government troops and members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). DTI Provincial Director Rolando Acuña said the state agency has fielded a team to check on the prices of basic and prime commodities in the area. Basic commodities include fish, rice, sugar, meat and canned goods while prime commodities include fruits, flour, toiletry and soap, among others. Acuña said once in place, the price freeze would return the cost of basic commodities to their prices a month ago. Acuña said most businesses in the city remained close for the second day on Tuesday after fighting broke out between soldiers and the MNLF. He called on businessmen to not take advantage of the situation, and said he is coordinating with the city’s business group to convince establishments to open their shops.
