By Mico Letargo AJPress/INQUIRER.net News Partner 3:00 am | Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 LOS ANGELES–After suffering financial strife due to the recession, the longtime community service nonprofit Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) raised an estimated $130,000 from supporters at its 41st anniversary gala on May 18. The funds were raised from sponsorships, dinner ticket sales, silent auction and other contributions during the celebration themed “Panibagong Simula!” (A New Beginning!) The money will help SIPA serve Filipino-Americans and others through health and human services, economic development programs and by providing a venue for people “to come together and strengthen the community,” explained the organization’s leaders. “Specifically, the expenses that are supported by [the] dinner revenue are the more general operating and administrative expenses of the organization–the operations of the building, facility costs, insurance and related costs,” Executive Director Joel Jacinto told Asian Journal via email. Silent auction a hit   SIPA’s much-anticipated annual silent auction featured premium merchandise and goods at the auction for almost half of their actual cost. Among the goodies were premium DVD and BluRay movie bags, collectors’ edition merchandise, Hollywood premiere night tickets, apparel and other memorabilia. According to Jacinto, approximately $5,000 was raised from the silent auction. The actual value of the items sold was around $10,000. Jacinto explained that SIPA usually puts the starting bid at about half of the actual value. Among the notable items sold was a Manny Pacquiao apparel package, valued at $525. It was sold for a winning bid of Read More …

Irish Culture in ‘The Rhythm of Dance’ and Faith of the Church in ‘Fides Ecclesiae’

by Myrna Aquitania Kateri Calungsod This weekend was truly uplifting for me not only did I find myself immersed on Irish culture when we watched “The Rhythm of Dance,” last Saturday night but also overwhelmed by the outstanding performance of the cast and crew of “Fides Ecclesiae” the following day on Sunday evening. On Saturday, after dinner at Mimi’s Cafe, we went to the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts and watched “The Rhythm of Dance.” “The Rhythm of Dance,” was a variety show which featured Irish tapdancing, singing performances by the three Irish tenors plus a showcase of traditional Irish background music played through the use of various musical instruments such as: the harp, fiddle, bodhran, pochette and guitar. Irish tapdancing is a theatrical show, much like Michael Flatly’s “Riverdance” which I have also seen sometime back. This consists of Irish stepdancing techniques shown by the rhythm of leg movements. Body and arms are also kept stationary and the dancers tap their shoes while hititng the floors, which emanates the sounds of percussive instruments. Musical instruments used such as the Celtic harp produces romantic music which has been an important symbol of Irish nationalism since the 10th century. The Irish fiddle on the other hand, is identical to the violin and is played differently in wide varying regional styles. The pochette or kit violin is a stringed musical instrument named as such due to its “pocket” size and the Bodhran is an Irish drum which symbolizes the heartbeat of Irish music. Traditional Irish music Read More …

Fil-Am bishop joins Calungsod musical

By Nimfa U. Rueda Philippine Daily Inquirer 3:22 am | Tuesday, February 5th, 2013 LOS ANGELES—First, he made history as the first Filipino to become bishop in the United States. Now, he scores another first—this time as the first Catholic bishop in America to perform in a theater musical. Oscar Solis and members of the Filipino Priests of Los Angeles—also the first group of priests to perform on stage—have joined the cast of “Fides Ecclesiae (Faith of the Church),” a musical about the lives of Pedro Calungsod, a newly canonized Filipino saint, and St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American saint. “Bishop Solis is the first member of the (US) Conference of Catholic Bishops to sing on stage,” said Fr. Robert Victoria, who wrote the script. “Fides Ecclesiae” is also the first Filipino production, as well as the first musical about the Catholic faith, to be staged at the Pantages Theater, a famous Los Angeles landmark known as the go-to venue for blockbuster Broadway entertainment. Victoria said the musical was not only historic but had also been marked by so many “miracles,” which were attributed to Saints Calungsod and Kateri—the two youngest among the seven saints canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican last October. He cited the stories of a lupus-stricken cast member who experienced a miraculous recovery and the mother of a production crew member who was healed of cancer. “The fact that we were able to get people from different nationalities—Filipinos, Chamorros, Chinese and Americans—to come Read More …
