Strategic anger

There is a potentially game changing development ahead of us. If things work out, maybe more than half of the total membership of our Senate could be suspended and even convicted of plunder. A significant number of congressmen and officials in the executive branch could suffer the same fate. This may yet be the big signal to the world that we are finally tired of corruption and are doing something about it. Unfortunately, it may be more difficult to strike this blow without the cooperation of the person who is at the center of the corruption scandal and who enriched herself by shamelessly stealing public funds. I take the statement of the Ombudsman that she does not need her testimony because she has enough evidence to convict as just so much bravado. If that is true, how come the Ombudsman has not yet filed the PDAF cases at the Sandiganbayan? Of course the testimony of the scam’s operator can only strengthen the case to assure quick conviction. Until she reportedly confessed it all to Justice Secretary De Lima, I was for showing no mercy in prosecuting Janet Lim Napoles, jailing her and throwing away the key. No one knows her real motives for now wanting to tell the truth or if she is capable of doing that. But her motives aside, we must hear her testimony if that can lead to the early conviction of the bastards we elected to public office. It is easy to say in social media Read More …

Is honor in business dead?

We humans love honor. We admire it. We love movies about it. We hero-worship people who display courageous acts of honor. We live in a country filled with amazing stories of honor — of Manuel Quezon honoring his word during the darkest days of Corregidor, of Ninoy Aquino sacrificing his life for principle. The list could go on and on. We love and admire it so much. Yet how many want to actually be honorable?  I have to wonder, what has happened to honor? Is it dead? Has it been replaced by the slick politician, smooth-talking lawyer, and the “cover-your-ass-at-all-costs” executive? Replaced by a Wall Street mentality of “It’s all about me and screw everyone else”? Seems we live in a world of “Blame somebody else.” There used to be a time when the mantra of the seas was, “The captain goes down with his ship. And captains did this. They put the safety of the crew and passengers above all else. This was the price of leadership of being a ship captain, and if you didn’t like it, then don’t take the damn job. Open the paper today and what do we see? We see the captain of a South Korean ferry who basically is the first one to jump off the listing ship and into a lifeboat, while he leaves over 250 teenagers to fend for themselves, under his orders to “stay below decks” and hence ensure their death during capsizing. Thousands of Filipinos join in celebration of two new saints

Devotees in Kidapawan City flock to Blessed John Paul II statue. Catholic devotees on Sunday, April 27, 2014, flock to a statue of Blessed John Paul II at the Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish in Barangay Amas, Kidapawan City in Cotabato, hours before the canonization rites in Vatican City for the late pontiff. Williamor A. Magbanua Thousands of Filipinos joined in the celebration of the canonization of Saints John Paul II and John XXIII on Sunday. According to GMA reporter Sandra Aguinaldo, who covered the celebration of the canonization at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao on Sunday afternoon, Quezon City might as well have been Vatican City. People from all walks of life packed the coliseum, “24 Oras” reported. Multiple big screens were set up in the coliseum so the audience could witness the historic event. After watching the live feed of the canonization rites in the Vatican, a procession of the relics of Saints John Paul II and John XXII followed. Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Tagle then celebrated a Holy Mass. In his homily, the cardinal opined that everyone could be as holy as the two new saints. “I have to convince myself, these faces are faces of people that can be holy…called by God,” he said. “Kahit ganyan ang mga mukha natin,” he quipped. Tagle turned emotional as he recalled how he, who used to sleep in class in his younger years, was called by God and now serves as a cardinal. Apart from the canonizations, the Catholic Read More …

White House confirms new security pact with Philippines

KUALA LUMPUR – A new security pact between the United States and the Philippines to be signed as President Barack Obama arrives in the southeast Asian nation on Monday is aimed at establishing greater stability in the region, not as a counter to Chinese assertiveness, US officials said on Sunday. The accord allows for enhanced “rotational presence” of US forces in the country – but not a return of US military bases. It will allow US forces to train and conduct exercises with Philippine forces for maritime security, disaster assistance and humanitarian aid, White House officials told reporters at a briefing. Officials accompanying Obama on a visit to Malaysia cited disaster response after last year’s Typhoon Yolanda as the kind of cooperation the pact would facilitate. “We’re not doing this because of China,” Evan Medeiros, Obama’s top Asia advisor, said when asked if the pact is meant as deterrent to China. — Reuters

US vow to defend PH in feud with China hangs over Obama visit

President Barack Obama AP FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines — Will the United States, the Philippines’ only defense treaty ally, come to its rescue if the row over portions of the South China Sea escalates into an armed conflict with Beijing? Washington has expressed support for Manila amid its raging territorial dispute with China. But the question still begs to be answered more categorically when US President Barack Obama wraps up his four-nation Asian trip in Manila where he’s expected to seal a deal allowing more American troops on Philippine soil. Obama is set to arrive at 1:30 p.m. on Monday (April 28) in Manila, the last stop of a seven-day Asian swing that also brought him to Japan, South Korea and Malaysia. Hounding him throughout the trip were questions on how he would reassure allies of Washington’s support amid China’s expansionism and growing military and economic influence in the region. It’s the same question that will confront him when he and President Benigno Aquino face the media in a joint press conference in Malacanang at 3:25 p.m. The Philippine and US panels have reportedly completed the Agreement on Enhanced Defense Cooperation, which would provide American troops greater access to military bases around the country. But on the eve of Obama’s arrival, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma said the Palace was still awaiting word from the Philippine panel on whether both sides had reached an agreement. As of 12:30 p.m. when he held his regular Sunday briefing on radio, he said both Read More …

PHL to thank Taiwan for Yolanda aid at Independence Day event in Taipei

The Philippines will express its thanks to Taiwan for its aid to victims of Typhoon Yolanda during the Philippine Independence Day celebration there on June 12. Philippine resident representative Antonio Basilio said the Philippine government will particularly thank the Taiwanese people for helping with relief and reconstruction efforts. Basilio, in an interview with Taiwan’s Central News Agency, also said the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) will send letters of gratitude to the Taiwanese government and non-government organizations for relief assistance. The CNA report also quoted him as saying the MECO plans to make announcements in local newspapers to express gratitude for Taiwan’s post-disaster assistance. It said public and private donors in Taiwan gave more than N$300 million (US$10.13 million) in supplies and other aid for Yolanda’s victims. Taiwanese individuals and businesses then gave another NT$22.38 million, while a Taiwanese Navy vessel delivered 530 metric tons of supplies to the Philippines and Taiwan military transport planes carried 150 metric tons of supplies. Last year, MECO canceled the Philippines’ national day celebration in Taiwan following the May 9 shooting death of a Taiwanese fisherman by members of the Philippine Coast Guard. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News

Obama urged to press PH on human rights protection, fight vs impunity

By Germelina LacorteInquirer Mindanao 5:41 pm | Sunday, April 27th, 2014 President Barack Obama. AP FILE PHOTO DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The international rights watchdog Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged US President Barack Obama to use his Manila visit to press the Philippine government to fulfill pledges to improve respect for human rights and accountability for serious abuses. “President Benigno Aquino III’s administration has undertaken reform efforts in some areas but failed to match rhetoric with meaningful action to end impunity for extrajudicial killings, torture, and enforced disappearances,” Human Rights Watch said in a statement. “While abuses overall have decreased since the previous Arroyo administration, killings of political activists, environmental advocates, and local politicians continue with alarming frequency and have begun to rise again, in many cases with apparent involvement by local authorities and the security forces,” the HRW said. “The Philippines remains a risky place to be an outspoken activist or muckraking journalist,” said John Sifton, HRW Asia advocacy director. “People taking on powerful local interests all too frequently make the news as victims, and those responsible for killings are almost never prosecuted,” Sifton added. The rights watchdog also wrote a letter to Obama the previous month, urging the US president to raise human rights issues during his visit to Manila. “The last year featured a major surge in killings of journalists in the Philippines: 12 were killed in 2013, bringing to 26 the total number of media workers killed since Aquino took office in 2010,” the HRW statement Read More …
