Toni Gonzaga, Paul Soriano engaged?

ARE Toni Gonzaga and Paul Soriano engaged? This was the question posted by the couple’s supporters on social media after an Instagram photo uploaded by seasoned actress Sandy Andolong hinted a possible engagement. Andolong posted a collage of her, Toni and the rest of “Home Sweetie Home” cast’s shooting in Japan and included a snap of the “Buzz” host with Soriano. After greeting Toni a happy birthday, Andolong called the television host a “loving and loyal fiancé.” She wrote: I truly enjoyed our short but memorable bonding in Japan. Wish & pray for more blessings, joy & peace in your life because you most certainly deserve it.” “No matter how famous you have become, you are so well grounded & a humble person. You are a very good & caring daughter, sister, & friend. A loving & loyal fiancé, and more importantly a very obedient child of God.” A photo posted by sandy_andolong de Leon (@sandy_andolong) on Jan 19, 2015 at 9:41am PST Toni, for her part, thanked Andolong. Last December, Toni’s younger sister Alex said that the TV host thought that Soriano will propose before the New Year after she found a Tiffany box in their house. It turned out the director was not yet ready to get down on one knee at the time. Toni and Paul are dating for over seven years now. We put on a good show for Pope Francis. He loved it; we loved it; the world loved it. Now the long and painful task of bringing about the changes the pope asked for begins. Start with the Philippine Catholic Church. It should refocus its efforts towards the poor. As we wrote in previous editorials, many priests and bishops see themselves as members of the rich and privileged class. They feel more at home in country clubs and dining in expensive restaurants, than they do helping the poor who live in the squatter communities that dot most cities in the Philippines. Priests and nuns run good schools but charge so much for tuition that only the very rich can afford to send their kids to them …

Large families a blessing – Pope

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis yesterday described large families as a “gift from God,” just days after he said Catholics did not need to “breed like rabbits.” In an apparent attempt to put the controversial comments he made on his way back from a visit to the Philippines into context, the Argentinian argued that the global economic system is the primary cause of poverty, rather than overpopulation. “The meetings with families and young people in Manila were important moments during the visit to the Philippines,” Francis told a crowd of around 7,000 gathered in St. Peter’s square for his weekly audience. “Healthy families are essential to the life of society. “It provides us with consolation and hope to see so many large families who welcome children as a gift from God. “These families know that each child is a blessing.” The Argentinian pontiff surprised reporters on the papal plane on Sunday by recounting an anecdote about how he had once asked a mother who had seven children by caesarian section and was pregnant with her eighth if she wanted to “leave behind seven young orphans.” “She said, ‘I trust in God.’ But God gave us the means to be responsible,” Francis said. “Some think – and excuse the term – that to be good Catholics, they must be like rabbits.” Following the church’s teachings did not mean “Christians should have children one after the other,” he added in comments that made headlines worldwide. Catholic teaching prohibits the use of artificial Read More …

“YOU CAN GIVE without loving, but you can’t love without giving.” Gift giving has always been a part of the Filipino culture — one that is innate and manifests our generosity towards others. It is our way of expressing gratitude, love, affection, friendship, or simply showing that we care. In a country where relationships (with family, friends, co-workers, etc.) are highly valued, giving gifts is seen as a way of strengthening these relationships. Most especially for Filipinos who have an extensive support network of family and friends, we tend to spend significant time, effort and money searching for the right gifts for special occasions and ceremonies.

Finding Anne Rice in New Orleans

After taking Cajun and Creole cooking at the International Culinary Education (ICE) in New York, I was charmed by its food. Since my daughter and I had been wanting to travel together for a few days on an adventure away from New York, our best bet was New Orleans, since we had on our lists Machu Picchu, London or Ireland, which would have required more expensive planning. I told her to search for the cheapest tickets that she could find. Lo and behold she found a round-trip ticket from NY to Louisiana for less than $200. So off we went to NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana) I am glad we chose New Orleans. The hotel we stayed at is located in the French Quarter where the action is: restaurants and cafes, music, and shopping centers. It is, after all, the cultural heartbeat that New Orleans is known for. On our first day, I was already charmed.  New Orleans has long been regarded as a major shopping destination. Our hotel  was located along Royal Street, which for nearly two centuries ruled as an antiquing center with dozens of shops and a wide array of offerings ranging from rare French furnishings to Southern estate jewelry. It has witnessed a surge in contemporary art galleries, and has created a mix of old and new coming together as a unique subculture. Along the French Quarter the streets are lined with chic boutiques, especially on infamous Magazine Street, also known as “the street of dreams.” One Read More …

Zamboanga mayor asks Congress to spare city from inclusion in Bangsamoro

Zamboanga City mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has opposed the possibility of the city’s inclusion in the envisioned Bangsamoro territory that will be formed as part of the comprehensive peace pact signed between the government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Speaking to lawmakers at the last public hearing on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) Wednesday, Climaco-Salazar said that while she and her constituents support the government’s peace efforts, the city should not be made part of the envisioned Bangsamoro core territory at any time. “The city should never form part nor be included in the Bangsamoro now or ever. Neither of its 98 barangays or municipalities should be part of Bangsamoro now or ever,” she said. Aside from excluding Zamboanga City from the Bangsamoro core territory, Climaco-Salazar said the city’s municipal waters will continue to remain its own while the Cabatangan property should be transferred to the national government and not purchased by Congress. She said the city government is willing to buy the land. Under Section 1, Article XVIII of Republic Act 9054, otherwise known as the Act to Strengthen and Expand the Organic Act for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), all properties in the areas which chose not to join the ARMM should be purchased by the national government. The local government units having jurisdiction over them, in turn, can buy the lands from the national government.  Right to self-determination But for Bangsamoro Transition Committee chair and MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal, the people of Read More …
