LEGO adopts Leandro Tayag’s design for Voltron

Leandro Tayag with his LEGO creation LEGO, the popular toy building bricks for children of all ages, has adopted Pinoy fan designer Leandro Tayag’s design for Voltron: Defender of the Universe as the next Lego toy model set. Tayag, a software architect based in Malaysia, was congratulated as the next official LEGO Ideas fan designer of the world’s largest toy company in the LEGO Ideas review results. “We’re really excited to be able to introduce Leandro’s Voltron – Defender of the Universe set,” announced LEGO Ideas. “Leandro’s project sets itself apart for its creative way to build with LEGO bricks,” declared LEGO Ideas Project Manager Sanne in a video announcement. Tayag revealed in a podcast how he used over 2,100 LEGO bricks using the LEGO Designer application to create his Voltron model set, including 5 robot lions that combine to form the giant robot. It comes with 6 Pilot mini-figs and a Blazing Sword and shield. The hobbyist created the Voltron set over 3 weeks, working 2 hours a night after work. The Super Robots fan started the initial design in 2014 but put it aside then went back to it in March 2016, he shared in a LEGO Ideas interview when he was first announced as a 10k member. The IT professional’s submission to the LEGO Ideas took about 22 days to reach 10,000 supporters – from April 11 to May 3. The LEGO Ideas Review Board looked at 12 of the most amazing fan designs submitted to the Read More …

Marianne Tarun discovery leads to faster tech devices

Marianne Tarun When Marianne Tarun was a Washington State University (WSU) doctoral student, she made an accidental discovery of a 400-fold increase in the electrical conductivity of a crystal simply by exposing it to light. The effect, which lasted for days after the light was turned off, could dramatically improve the performance of devices like computer chips, according to WSU News. Tarun noticed that the conductivity of some strontium titanate shot up after it was left out one day under room light exposure and room temperature. The Filipino scientist shared how the team at first didn’t realize the increased conductivity was due to the light exposure, thinking that the sample was contaminated. A series of experiments proved that the light in fact was the cause of the increased crystal conductivity. “One very remarkable implication of this…is the holographic memory where we could write and read data optically,” said the Filipino physicist in a video report made in 2013 when the discovery was made. Matthew McCluskey, Tarun’s co-author of the paper and chair of WSU's physics department, explained, "The discovery of this effect at room temperature opens up new possibilities for practical devices. In standard computer memory, information is stored on the surface of a computer chip or hard drive. A device using persistent photoconductivity, however, could store information throughout the entire volume of a crystal. This approach, called holographic memory, could lead to huge increases in information capacity," McCluskey said. What Tarun and the WSU team foresaw in 2013, is Read More …

Never Punish Yourself for Your Mistakes

Chinkee Tan Have you done something you deeply regret? Bought something in a sale but never use it at all? Went into a business deal and lost money instead of making money. Someone borrowed money but never paid you back. It may have happened many years ago but you still could not seem to forget it. If you are going through this process, you are experiencing SELF-BLAME. When you are in this mode, you feel that you are a loser. You cannot think straight and you’ve been robbed of your self-confidence. What makes matters worse is that everyone around you seems to be reminding you about this mistake. Before you punish yourself even more, just like to remind you that, “Everyone makes mistakes. Don’t punish yourself for your misgivings.” Name me one person who succeeded in life without making a mistake. It is never about the mistake, it is what you do about it? Do you want to be able to move on? If you are having a hard time, maybe it's because you still haven’t forgiven yourself. Do you know that the hardest thing in this life is to forgive oneself? If you’re having a hard time, I’m the one asking you – PLEASE GIVE YOURSELF ANOTHER CHANCE. If you are able to forgive others, why don’t you forgive yourself? Why are you TOO HARD on yourself? It’s okay to have high standards in life, but if you fall short of your own expectations, give yourself room to grow and Read More …

Globe promotes reducing carbon footprint through bike commuting

Globe Telecom is advocating bike commuting among its employees to help reduce carbon foot print. Globe employees join Bike2Globe launch [via Globe] Called Bike2Globe, the program encourages Globe employees to use bicycles as alternative transportation to cars to help reduce fossil fuel emissions in the environment and combat climate change. “It is Globe Telecom’s advocacy to reduce our impact to the environment and support a low carbon future to address climate change.  We want to extend that to our stakeholders, primarily our employees, and one of the easiest and most effective ways to do it is by promoting the use of bikes,” said Raymond Martin S. Aguilar, Globe Head for Operational Risk Management and Business Protection in a media release. Bike2Globe also supports the UN SDG 11 on making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable through access to affordable and sustainable transport. Globe employees without their own bikes can avail of the company-provided e-bikes for work-related errands around the Globe offices. The e-bikes use electric motor but can be pedaled manually when the battery runs out. A launch event and motorcade for Bike2Globe was held in Bonifacio Global City to help bring up public awareness on the benefits of riding the bike. The same event had the National Bike Organization discussed bike and road safety in a forum.   The post Globe promotes reducing carbon footprint through bike commuting appeared first on Good News Pilipinas. Duterte issues reminder, but no new policies, in meeting with mining execs

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, in his speech during the 26th anniversary celebration of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Theater in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on August 2, 2017, clarifies that he doesn’t need government workers to be loyal to him but insists that they should be loyal to the country. (MNS photo) MANILA, Aug 4 (Mabuhay) –President Rodrigo Duterte met with mining executives on Thursday night in Malacañang days after he threatened to “tax to death” the industry amid issues of illegal mining in the country. But Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Duterte assured the mining executives that they won’t have a problem as long as they follow mining rules in the country. “During that meeting with the miners, the President essentially said that, for as long as mining groups, whether big or small, follow the rules on mining and keep environmental laws in mind then there would be no problem and they can continue with their operations,” Guevarra said at a press conference in Pasay City. Duterte was accompanied by Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go and Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu. During his second Sona, the President said that he would tax to death mining industry if they don’t clean up the adverse effects of their mining operations.
