Are You Ready To Take The Next Business Challenge?

Each one of us goes through highs and lows in life. In this imperfect world, we strive to become the best person that we can be. But along the way, we face challenges that could change our lives forever. It is up to us how we look at these challenges.  Is the glass half full or half empty? People have different opinions.  In my case, I strive to see the beauty in imperfection. I choose to only see the positive side of life because it helps me become more effective at what I do.  As a business mentor, I provide encouragement to people. I motivate them to take the leap and stand up.  When you face a challenge, there are only two options: grow up, or give up. Which one will you take? GROWING UP Who do you look up to? One may take inspiration from parents who struggle to work abroad to provide a better life for their families, or a boss who was able to climb the ladder to success starting out as a janitor, or the man selling balut across the street who won the lottery and shared his blessings to abandoned elderly, or even the homeless woman who was able to send her children to school with her measly earnings from selling flowers.  You may have seen their struggles in life, seen the hardships they had to endure before meeting a better life. As an entrepreneur, going through similar ordeals is part of the process. It Read More …

Megaworld’s ‘The Mactan Newtown’ cultivates own ‘Mango Festival’

Megaworld recently harvested almost 1,000 kilos of mangoes at The Mactan Newtown along the Megaworld Blvd where 200 mango trees were planted. Megaworld Cebu Properties, Inc. president Noli D. Hernandez and Lapu-Lapu City Tourism head Hembler Mendoza [via Megaworld] The 30-hectare township with its own version of Cebu City’s Mango Avenue, started its land development in 2009 with around 210 mango trees planted along Newtown Boulevard, the main road that traverses the development. After eight years, several mango trees have grown healthy, producing fruits ready for harvest during the months of May and June. “It was the idea of our chairman, Dr. Andrew L. Tan, to really grow mango trees in the township because Cebu is best known for its mangoes,” reveals Noli D. Hernandez, president, Megaworld Cebu Properties, Inc. This year’s harvest season have so far produced around 986 kilos of mangoes. “Some trees, especially those near the construction areas, need to be ‘strengthened’ as they don’t bear fruits anymore. But we are hopeful that with the ongoing cultivation of the trees, more fruits may be harvested in the next season,” explains Hernandez. Megaworld plans to create its own ‘Mango Festival’ every year to celebrate the harvest season. The company is coordinating with the local government to make it part of the regular tourism events in Lapu-Lapu City. “This will certainly be a major tourist attraction because of the popularity of Cebu mangoes,” Hernandez adds. This year’s harvested mangoes will be sold at the Mactan Alfresco.   The post Megaworld’s ‘The Mactan Read More …

Never Punish Yourself for Your Mistakes

Chinkee Tan Have you done something you deeply regret? Bought something in a sale but never use it at all? Went into a business deal and lost money instead of making money. Someone borrowed money but never paid you back. It may have happened many years ago but you still could not seem to forget it. If you are going through this process, you are experiencing SELF-BLAME. When you are in this mode, you feel that you are a loser. You cannot think straight and you’ve been robbed of your self-confidence. What makes matters worse is that everyone around you seems to be reminding you about this mistake. Before you punish yourself even more, just like to remind you that, “Everyone makes mistakes. Don’t punish yourself for your misgivings.” Name me one person who succeeded in life without making a mistake. It is never about the mistake, it is what you do about it? Do you want to be able to move on? If you are having a hard time, maybe it's because you still haven’t forgiven yourself. Do you know that the hardest thing in this life is to forgive oneself? If you’re having a hard time, I’m the one asking you – PLEASE GIVE YOURSELF ANOTHER CHANCE. If you are able to forgive others, why don’t you forgive yourself? Why are you TOO HARD on yourself? It’s okay to have high standards in life, but if you fall short of your own expectations, give yourself room to grow and Read More …

Is Busyness The Key to Success?

Chinkee Tan One of the most frequently asked questions I received from my speaking engagement is, “How can I become successful in life?” This is a fact: people who are goal-oriented, determined, persevering, skilled, and focused are the ones who achieve the goals they have set for themselves. We all know that these intangibles are essentials if one is to accomplish a certain task, may it be big or small, long-term or short-term. We all get it. These people are so determined and so focused that sometimes we ask ourselves “Don’t these people get a breather?” or “Where do they get all that energy? Wherever they got it, I want one too!” I can tell you with authority because I am speaking based on my personal experience. When I work, it is as if there is no tomorrow! However, although all the “go go go!” and “hoorahs!” are needed to achieve success, it is also important to understand that busyness can be damaging in certain circumstances. While being goal-oriented and being preoccupied almost 24/7 is noteworthy, we should also pause and ask ourselves: when did busyness become a core value? Some people feel that busyness is the new cool. If you have so much in your plate and your schedule is always full with different activities and work-related agendas, we feel that we are actually, and always getting somewhere. But before we praise ourselves for being so preoccupied with so many things, let us stop and ask ourselves a few Read More …

How Cultural Differences Affect Doing Business

Armando Bartolome Technological advancements have brought people closer. It is now possible to reach people across the globe with just a few clicks. People from different parts of the world, coming from different cultural backgrounds, are now working and communicating together. Thus, for many businesses, it is very important for managers and staff to understand cultural diversity.  We need to be sensitive and respectful. We need to understand that what is accepted as normal in one culture may not be acceptable to another. If your business is in a multicultural environment, understanding differences in culture will help you better deal with and motivate your business associates and employees.  DIFFERENCES IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT STYLES Business management styles differ from country to country. A management style which is valued in European countries may be ineffective in the Philippines.  You may have noticed how Filipinos often address their subordinates using their first name which is considered as a normal gesture in the Philippines. But this will be perceived as impolite in European countries.  Many business leaders today share similar values as well as leadership styles. Nevertheless, we should note that management styles differ across countries because of the influence of political changes, the level of mobility, market globalization and the technological progress.  Additionally, management styles also depend on the level of education, economic development, corporate culture and available technology.  The conventional management style may vanish in time as globalization progresses and more and more businesses deal with multiple cultures and countries. How to Know If You Have a True Friend?

Chinkee Tan Let’s say you were suddenly promoted, or you have a new gadget, or perhaps something really good happened to you. Then from out of the blue, here comes this person who is suddenly full of praises for you, “Wow, man you’re so lucky! Don’t forget to share your blessings with me, okay! After all, you and I go a long way!” Or maybe you have been in these situations: “Hi, I want to offer you these really great products. I’m sure you can afford my terms. C’mon, let’s have coffee.” “I’m so embarrassed. We haven’t seen each other in a while, but I really need some money. I don’t know who else to turn to for help.” “Wow, you’re a manager now. Imagine, you were just a rank and file officer? Maybe you can squeeze in an opening for me?” Bottom line is, you haven’t seen each other or even talked to each other in a very, very long time…hey, you’re not even sure if you ever became friends but you clearly remember when he would belittle your skills in front of others and won’t even lift a finger to help you in your times of need. This is what you call a “user friendly people”. People like them are like “mushrooms”, they sudden show up when they have something to gain from you, but when they don’t need you anymore then they quickly disappear.
