Globe launches PHL’s 1st mobile money QR payment

Globe Telecom has set up the Philippines’ first QR payments system via smartphone with the launch of “GoPay.” GCash launches the country’s first mobile money QR payment. “GoPay” feature in the GCash app allows customers to use their GCash account to pay for goods and services by simply scanning QR codes displayed by merchants and establishments. The country’s leading mobile money service provider anticipates that the new feature will allow consumers hassle-free payments with the elimination of cash transactions, long lines, and inaccurate charges. Merchants would also benefit from “GoPay” with the elimination of expensive machines for processing mobile money transactions. “GoPay” only requires QR codes linked to the GCash wallet. The new app feature will allow even ambulant vendors and sari-sari store owners to utilize the system. "Our goal has always been to make finance more inclusive by building a cashless ecosystem. GoPay QR payments solution will close the loop and drive merchants accepting GCash payments. We plan to extend this service from all types of retailers nationwide down to our favorite fishball vendor," said John Rubio CEO and President of Mynt, a subsidiary of Globe Telecom dedicated to developing payments solutions using GCash, in a Globe Telecom release.  JM Aujero, Mynt Merchant Acquiring Head added:  “With GoPay QR, consumers don't even need to bring cash when they go shopping or when they eat out.  It is the best option for people who do not want to use credit cards but are either wary of having cash with them due to safety reasons or just want the convenience that mobile money offers.”  Read More …

Megaworld’s ‘The Mactan Newtown’ cultivates own ‘Mango Festival’

Megaworld recently harvested almost 1,000 kilos of mangoes at The Mactan Newtown along the Megaworld Blvd where 200 mango trees were planted. Megaworld Cebu Properties, Inc. president Noli D. Hernandez and Lapu-Lapu City Tourism head Hembler Mendoza [via Megaworld] The 30-hectare township with its own version of Cebu City’s Mango Avenue, started its land development in 2009 with around 210 mango trees planted along Newtown Boulevard, the main road that traverses the development. After eight years, several mango trees have grown healthy, producing fruits ready for harvest during the months of May and June. “It was the idea of our chairman, Dr. Andrew L. Tan, to really grow mango trees in the township because Cebu is best known for its mangoes,” reveals Noli D. Hernandez, president, Megaworld Cebu Properties, Inc. This year’s harvest season have so far produced around 986 kilos of mangoes. “Some trees, especially those near the construction areas, need to be ‘strengthened’ as they don’t bear fruits anymore. But we are hopeful that with the ongoing cultivation of the trees, more fruits may be harvested in the next season,” explains Hernandez. Megaworld plans to create its own ‘Mango Festival’ every year to celebrate the harvest season. The company is coordinating with the local government to make it part of the regular tourism events in Lapu-Lapu City. “This will certainly be a major tourist attraction because of the popularity of Cebu mangoes,” Hernandez adds. This year’s harvested mangoes will be sold at the Mactan Alfresco.   The post Megaworld’s ‘The Mactan Read More …

Marianne Tarun discovery leads to faster tech devices

Marianne Tarun When Marianne Tarun was a Washington State University (WSU) doctoral student, she made an accidental discovery of a 400-fold increase in the electrical conductivity of a crystal simply by exposing it to light. The effect, which lasted for days after the light was turned off, could dramatically improve the performance of devices like computer chips, according to WSU News. Tarun noticed that the conductivity of some strontium titanate shot up after it was left out one day under room light exposure and room temperature. The Filipino scientist shared how the team at first didn’t realize the increased conductivity was due to the light exposure, thinking that the sample was contaminated. A series of experiments proved that the light in fact was the cause of the increased crystal conductivity. “One very remarkable implication of this…is the holographic memory where we could write and read data optically,” said the Filipino physicist in a video report made in 2013 when the discovery was made. Matthew McCluskey, Tarun’s co-author of the paper and chair of WSU's physics department, explained, "The discovery of this effect at room temperature opens up new possibilities for practical devices. In standard computer memory, information is stored on the surface of a computer chip or hard drive. A device using persistent photoconductivity, however, could store information throughout the entire volume of a crystal. This approach, called holographic memory, could lead to huge increases in information capacity," McCluskey said. What Tarun and the WSU team foresaw in 2013, is Read More …
