EM ASIA FX-Ringgit near 3-wk high ahead of budget, Asia FX up on dovish Fed

(Updates prices. For midday report, double-click ) SEOUL, Oct 9 (Reuters) – The Malaysian ringgit hit a near three-week high on Thursday ahead of the country’s budget for 2015, leading gains in emerging Asian currencies as minutes from the U.S. Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting eased concerns that it may raise interest rates more quickly than expected The ringgit rose as high as 3.2310 per dollar, its strongest since Sept. 22, ahead of the country’s 2015 budget announcement on Friday. Investors are hoping the government will follow up on the increase in administered fuel price announced on Oct. 1, by announcing changes to the fuel subsidy regime when Prime Minister Najib Razak delivers the 2015 budget proposals. An aide to the prime minister has said the government is considering moving off the current blanket subsidy for all consumers to a system that only benefits middle and lower income groups. Thailand’s baht advanced on stop-loss dollar selling and exporters’ demand for settlements. Local stocks and bond prices rose. The Philippine peso touched a two-week high on stop-loss dollar selling. The dollar index, a gauge of the greenback’s performance against six major currencies, fell to a two-week low. Minutes of the Fed’s September meeting released on Wednesday suggested the central bank was in no hurry to raise interest rates. Policymakers were worried the recent rally in the greenback might slow the gradual increase in inflation towards the Fed’s 2 percent goal. Q and A: Miles Teller on 'Whiplash,' ambition and Elvis

Miles Teller poses for a portrait to promote his new film, “Whiplash,” in New York. The film is an acclaimed indie about an aspiring jazz drummer and his drill sergeant instructor. Dan Hallman/Invision/AP How badly does Miles Teller want it? In “Whiplash,” he plays an aspiring jazz drummer at a Julliard-like New York music conservatory, playing until his hands bleed to meet the impossible standards of his oppressively perfectionist teacher (J.K. Simmons). The movie, a festival hit since winning a heap of awards at Sundance, rhythmically beats on the theme of ambition and its high sacrifices. Teller, too, is an up-and-comer, tagged as one of Hollywood’s hottest rising stars. He landed his first movie role, 2010’s “Rabbit Hole,” partly because Nicole Kidman was impressed that he — playing a fragile kid weighed by guilt from a fatal car accident — blushed in the audition. Like his “Whiplash” character, Andrew, Teller can play the drums, and spent three weeks cramming to learn to play the jazz pieces of the film. The Florida-native was schooled in New York, too, studying acting at New York University’s Lee Strasburg Theatre and Film Institute. Speaking to the candid, jokey Teller, the confident, frat-boy charm he showed in “Project X” and “21 & Over” comes through. But so does the clear-eyed ambition of the sensitive actor of “The Spectacular Now” who will also soon be inducted into the superhero realm, playing Mr. Fantastic in “The Fantastic Four.” But the Oscar-buzzed “Whiplash” sounds Teller’s serious aspirations. He’d Read More …

Asean integration to bring growth for property industry

THE country’s real estate industry is expected to grow further next year with the upcoming Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) Economic Integration in 2015, which is expected to attract foreign investors, and with the region’s increasing role in global economy. Noel Cariño, president of Chamber of Real Estate and Builders Association, said the country’s largest organization of key players in the domestic real estate industry, the Asean integration in 2015 will change the economic landscape of the whole region, particularly the real estate market. The elimination of tariffs on goods and services by a single Asean economy would drive consumer spending higher. “The demand for residential spaces adjacent to malls, retail complexes and other recreational spaces would go up and will likely increase the already healthy real estate market,” Cariño explains. The influx of investment and elimination of trade barriers will allow each country in Asean to enjoy unimpeded and free flow of goods, services, labor and capital. The potential impact of the integration would require more commercial and residential infrastructure for highly urbanized cities within the region including key cities of the Philippines. “Residential, commercial and retail developers, which will be exposed to international market will expand their operations and acquire properties inside and outside the country. While foreign investors and corporate executives with local operations in the country will look for residential spaces for a place to stay,” Cariño added. Creba, however, reiterated the country must continue to pursue relevant market reforms in order to remain Read More …

PH forex reserves drop as dollar strengthens

By Paolo G. Montecillo |Philippine Daily Inquirer 5:56 am | Wednesday, October 8th, 2014 MANILA, Philippines–The Philippines’ foreign exchange reserves slipped in September as the dollar strengthened, bringing down the value of foreign currency-denominated assets, data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) showed. Despite the decline last month, the country’s gross international reserves (GIR) level remains well above international average and enough to cover several months’ worth of imports—giving the country substantial buffer from external shocks. “The decrease in reserves was due mainly to revaluation adjustments on the BSP’s gold holdings and other foreign currency-denominated reserves,” the central bank said in a statement. Preliminary data showed that the country’s GIR, held by the BSP, stood at $80.43 billion as of end-September. The BSP said this was lower than the $80.87 billion recorded the month before. The GIR level remains ample as it can cover 10.9 months’ worth of imports of goods and payments of services and income. It is also equivalent to 8.4 times the country’s short-term external debt based on original maturity. Apart from the effects of foreign exchange valuation adjustments, the country’s reserves also declined as a result of payments of maturing foreign exchange obligations of the government. These outflows were partially offset by the foreign exchange operations of the BSP, net foreign currency deposits by the National Treasury and income from the BSP’s investments abroad. Dollar reserves serve as a line of defense to allow the economy to withstand external financial crises that may lead to Read More …

Palace: World Bank optimism due to PNoy’s reforms, competent Pinoys

Malacañang on Monday credited the Aquino administration’s reform programs and the “competent” Filipino workforce for World Bank’s positive outlook on the Philippines. In a text message, presidential spokesman Secretary Edwin Lacierda attributed the World Bank’s optimism to the administration’s economic policies. “It’s a recognition of the administration’s prudent fiscal management, sound monetary policies and the governance structural reforms we have undertaken,” Lacierda said. In a recent report, the World Bank said the Philippines continues to have growth potential despite challenges posed by natural calamities and a recovering global economy. The Philippine economy grew by 6.4 percent during the second quarter of the year—the second fastest in Asia—amid the lingering effects of Typhoon Yolanda, which devastated parts of the country late last year. Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr., meanwhile, said the World Bank’s assessment “mirrors the optimism and confidence” of European and American government and business leaders. “They believe in the solid growth prospects of the Philippines, and its suitability as a hub for Asian operations, especially because of our highly skilled and competent people and on account of good governance,” he said in a separate text message. Last month, President Benigno Aquino III embarked on a two-week visit to Europe and the United States to woo investors to the Philippines. He was able to bring home $2.38 billion in investments from his Europe trip and $2.35 billion from his US visit. —KBK, GMA News

Filipinos going to HK advised to be careful

An aerial view shows a thinned crowd of pro-democracy student protesters continuing to occupy the streets around the government complex in Hong Kong, Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014. Raising the stakes in their standoff with the authorities, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protesters threatened to occupy key government buildings unless the territory’s top official resigns by the end of the day Thursday. AP MANILA, Philippines—Malacañang on Saturday advised Filipinos traveling to Hong Kong to be vigilant following a clash between pro-democracy protesters and anti-protester groups. After days of protests by demonstrators moving to occupy large swaths of the city in their call for full free elections, the Philippine government still has to issue a formal travel advisory. “To everyone going there, please be aware of your surroundings, especially because there are some protests in tourist spots,” Palace spokeswoman Abigail Valte said over government-run dzRB radio. “Be mindful of your surroundings.” On Friday, tension grew in two of the city’s shopping districts, after anti-protester groups dismantled barricades and faced off with the demonstrators. They were separated by the police. The demonstrators, known as Occupy Central, had set a Thursday midnight ultimatum for Chief Executive Leung Chunying to resign, and for Beijing to drop proposals that it vet candidates aspiring for the chief executive’s post in 2017. The demonstrators are demanding open nominations, instead of a process wherein mostly pro-Beijing panel will screen candidates for the territory’s first election to choose its leader in 2017. Valte reiterated the Philippine foreign office’s appeal to Filipinos to Read More …
