EU official to visit PH to boost development ties

AFP PHOTO MANILA, Philippines—The European Commissioner for Development will visit the Philippines on Sunday to strengthen bilateral development cooperation between the European Union and the Philippines. European Union (EU) commissioner Andris Piebalgs said the highlight of his visit is the support to the Philippines “on its path to reduce poverty, strengthen the rule of law and support Mindanao’s Peace Process.” Aligned with the Philippines Development Plan for 2011 until 2016, EU development assistance delivers annually to the country about €640 million of grants “to combat poverty.” Piebalgs will meet Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita, Quintos Deles, Socio-economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balicasan, Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla and Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Evan Garcia. Ahead of the visit, Commissioner Piebalgs said in a statement: “I am pleased to see rapid economic growth in the Philippines in past few years. However it is now important to deepen the economic reforms and make this growth more inclusive.” As part of Piebalgs’ itinerary, he will visit the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of the Department of Agriculture, which is supported by the EU Trade Related Technical Assistance (TRTA) project. US, Great Britain cite Filipinos’ resilience in the wake of Typhoon ‘Yolanda’

Migrant Center launched in New York City

Octavio Duran NEW YORK—Inspired by the Franciscan tradition of offering sanctuary to people who are alienated, displaced and persecuted, the Migrant Center at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi began operations to welcome immigrants and provide a place of refuge. The Franciscan Friars of the Holy Name Province were in full attendance and support at San Damiano Hall on November 2 when a proclamation was signed by 24 religious and non-profit organizations. Fr. Andrew Reitz, OFM, pastor and guardian of the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi NYC welcomed over 100 guests, followed by a sharing of real-life stories of immigrants who were abused and persecuted due to their lack of legal status. A panel of immigration attorneys consisting of Eve Guillergan, Cristina Godinez and Tom Shea spoke on the state of immigration reforms and entertained questions from the community. Saudi assurance: No arrests while OFWs are processed

INQUIRER FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines—Vice President Jejomar Binay on Friday said that Saudi Arabia’s labor authorities have assured overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who failed to beat the Nov. 3 deadline to fix their status but had started the process that will not be arrested as long as there are no violations. Binay, in a statement, said he raised Manila’s concerns about the stranded OFWs with Bahrain’s labor minister, Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan, concurrent chair of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) Council of Labor Ministers, who was in Manila on official visit. Humaidan, accompanied by the Philippines’ special envoy to the GCC, Amable Aguiluz V, paid a courtesy call on the Vice President on Wednesday. “Upon recommendation of Aguiluz to [me], the minister called Saudi deputy labor minister, Mr. Mufreg Al-Haqbani, appealing not to make arrests nor harm those who are found not having travel documents,” Binay said. “Subsequently, Philippine Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ezzedin Tago received a message from the labor deputy minister Mr. Al-Haqbani giving assurance that Filipinos will be treated well while processing their exit visas,” Binay said. The body, placed in a “beautifully made” wooden casket arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at around 10 a.m., according to Bunyi’s father, Rodrigo Camia. Despite threats from Supertyphoon “Yolanda” (international name “Haiyan”), Camia said the flight did not encounter any delay. Rizalina, a 55-year-old obstetrician, was with her husband Nelson, a pediatrician, and two daughters in Beijing when a car plowed into a crowd as they were near the Tiananmen Square. Nelson sustained a fracture while daughters Francisca Ysabel, 23, and Mikaella, 21, suffered less serious injuries. The Bunyis returned to the Philippines on Nov. 2. Two days later, Nelson and Mikaella had undergone an operation, which turned out fine, according to Camia. Interviewed by phone, Camia, 84, expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and the Philippine Embassy in China for looking after the family after the attack. EU expresses solidarity with typhoon-battered Philippines

As it confronts yet another natural calamity I express my solidarity with the Filipino people and my deep sympathy with those who have lost their loved ones or their livelihoods,” said EU Ambassador to the Philippines Guy Ledoux. “An EU humanitarian aid team is already in the Philippines to assess the impact of the typhoon and find out how the EU can be most helpful to those most urgent need,” he said. Korean fugitive caught in Boracay after failing to pay hotel bill

The fugitive was identified as Kim Jin Soo, 25, who is now being held at the Bureau of Immigration’s detention center in Bicutan, Taguig City. He faces deportation upon the issuance of an order from the Bureau’s Board of Commissioners. The Korean, who has been overstaying since December last year, was initially arrested by tourist policemen in Boracay for allegedly failing to pay his hotel bill and was turned over to immigration officials. The bureau of Immigration said the South Korean embassy had sought its assistance in locating the fugitive so he could be made to answer embezzlement charges against him in South Korea. DFA suspends services at satellite offices in Metro Manila

Oldest Fil-Am World War II veteran dies

Photo by Eric Lachica LOS ANGELES–As the nation prepares to honor war veterans on Nov. 11, the Filipino-American community mourns the loss of Maj. Alberto C. Bacani, the oldest Fil-Am World War II veteran. Bacani, who was from Isabela, died on Tuesday in Alexandria, Virginia. He was 102. He was the first Fil-Am veteran to be recognized by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs under the 2009 Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation law. After the war, Bacani worked as a teacher and school principal, and later as a registrar at the University of the East. He retired in 1976 and migrated to the US. Bacani worked as a librarian at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Crystal City, Virginia. The EPA library reading room was named after him when he retired after 34 years of service at the age of 98. Bacani, even in his nineties, continued to actively advocate for the rights and welfare of WWII veterans. As a member of the Washington DC-based American Coalition for Filipino Veterans, he frequently lobbied senators, members of congress and US presidents for support of Filipino veterans equity bills.
