Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo attended yesterday a mass that marked the end of her 13-month-old grandson’s wake. The special mass was held at the residence of Evangeline “Luli” Arroyo-Bernas and her husband Luigi Bernas in North Forbes Park, Makati City at the last day of the wake of their son, Jorge “Jugo” Alonzo Bernas, sources said. Jugo’s remains were cremated shortly after his death last Nov. 2 due to a congenital heart ailment at the Philippine Heart Center. Arroyo obtained a six-day furlough from detention at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City to attend the wake from noon to 10 p.m. each day and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. yesterday. Her husband, former first gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo, and their close friends and relatives also attended the mass. No journalist was allowed to cover the event upon the request of Luli, lawyers of the family said. Luli, Arroyo’s only daughter, is known to be protective of her family’s privacy. “Thank you for the kind messages and for condoling with us. We ask for privacy for the family at this time,” Luli said in a statement last week. Arroyo left her daughter’s residence promptly at 3 p.m. escorted by police vans. – Paolo Romero

Binay is in Cebu for several meetings. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Businessman Antonio Tiu on Wednesday said his legal team is now studying the possibility of filing charges against Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano, over what the former claimed as defamatory words thrown by the lawmaker against him in the recent hearing of the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee. “Pinag-aaralan po ng ating mga abogado kung ano ang dapat gawin upang i-protekta ang interes ng aking kumpanya at ang aking pagkatao. So malalaman po natin sa darating na mga araw,” Tiu said at a press conference in Quezon City when asked if he was planning to file charges against Cayetano. At the same time, Tiu criticized Cayetano for allegedly making fun of the serious issue of kidnapping just to force him to waive bank secrecy and let the Senate scrutinize his bank accounts. “Hindi na nakontento si Senator Cayetano na maliitin ang pagkatao ko, nilagay niya pa sa panganib ang pamilya ko at ang buhay ko sa kanyang pagpilit saakin na isiwalat ang pera ko sa bangko. Sabi niya, hindi naman mapanganib na gawin ko ito dahil pwede naman akong Read More …
BASEY, Samar — His head bent as he plays with the red laces of his tattered sneakers, 13-year-old Joshua Villanueva haltingly recounts how he lost both his parents and two younger sisters last November. Now living with elderly grandparents and a cousin who also lost a parent, Villanueva is one of dozens, possibly hundreds, of children orphaned by Typhoon Yolanda which killed or left missing some 7,000 people after ripping through the Philippines. Yolanda, the strongest storm on record to ever hit land, struck Villanueva’s coastal community with such ferocity on Nov. 8 last year that no trace remained of his former home. His family’s evacuation to a relative’s home on higher ground the night before the storm did not prevent the tragedy. “My father was holding me and my two sisters when a concrete block which was part of the wall hit his head,” said Villanueva, a small boy with spiky hair who looks younger than his age. The torrent of water separated the family. Villanueva said he survived by holding onto a coconut tree. The bodies of his father and sisters were found the next day. It took a month before his mother was found. “I was hoping she would still be alive because it took so long for her body to turn up,” Villanueva said, not looking up. UNICEF, the United Nations’ children agency, said Yolanda affected 5.9 million children, yet it is unclear how many have been orphaned. The Department for Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Read More …

Korbitec managing director Riaan Basson, Property24.com.ph country manager Steve Santos, Korbicapital chief financial officer Louis Malherbe MANILA, Philippines – It makes no sense to go on a wild goose chase when looking for that perfect home or office space. When schedules are tight and the idea of navigating through traffic-clogged thoroughfares becomes too daunting, trawling the Internet becomes so much more attractive. This allows prospective buyers to narrow down their choices before finally deciding to invest. Even for brokers, the Internet is a boon because it allows them to show their property inventory to a wider audience of qualified prospective buyers. Because photos and other specifics regarding a property are shared through the Internet, only those who are truly interested will visit a property that is for sale. Ergo, less time is wasted in showing a place to people who won’t like it anyway. Among the online property portals in the Philippines, there is Property24.com.ph. As the fastest growing real estate portal, it provides an effective online platform for leading real estate developers, agencies and brokers. MANILA, Philippines—When United Nations resident humanitarian coordinator Luiza Carvalho starts her new job in Panama next week, she will be sitting behind a one-of-a-kind desk—a huge table made out of the trunk of a mango tree that she purchased on the spot on a trip to Tagaytay City. “Can you believe it? A very, very big mango tree was made into a table, and I’m taking it with me. It’s a dining table, but I’m going to transform it into my office desk. Because it’s going to be mine. I’m not going to share it,” said Carvalho, smiling widely and gesturing as if to smooth out the absent desk. “I spotted it and it was full of dust. But when they dusted it off, the wood was yellowish and quite thick,” Carvalho said. Already packed and freighted for the 30-hour trip to Latin America, the mango table from the Philippines is where Carvalho will be writing her reports, making important calls, hatching ideas and making decisions as the new regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean at UN Women. When my sister-in-law asked me what XO meant, I said, without hesitation, “Extraordinaire.” I was mistaken but not quite, because although it means “extra old,” it is really quite extraordinary. A little breathless from a rich and indulgent dinner, with your cheeks slightly flushed from copious amounts of wine, there is that ubiquitous pause as an enjoyable meal winds down, your lips still smacking sweet from a lingering dessert as it curls into a gentle smile of satisfaction. You have overindulged, and joyfully so because the food was good and the company excellent, but there is one thing missing, that perfect ending to a perfect epicurean experience, both equally meant to close a fine meal and open a spectacular late evening of meaningful conversation: cognac. I have always admired the beautiful, glinting amber liquid — inviting, temptingly glinting in the sensual afterglow of indulgence, an elegant digestive that enables the pleasures of the table to linger a little more. I don’t recall when I first tried it but I do vividly remember the rest of the moments after… long, delicious-tasting dinners with my husband, from canapés to mignardises, starting with Champagne and following through with white and red, culminating in a happy state of inebriation. We know we shouldn’t, really, as we are tottering on the border of tipsy and drunk, but it is our favorite guilty pleasure, savoring a nice cognac that splendidly puts us over the edge as we giddily stumble out of the restaurant doors as chicly Read More …
